My Review of A Family on His Doorstep
A Family on His Doorstep is the sweet, uplifting debut Love Inspired book from author Alena Auguste. It’s a found family type of romance set in the charming town of Eden, Texas.
When Rebecca Young arrives in the small town where she hopes to find a job, her first stop is to drop off a box of her ex’s things. She expects to leave it on the porch and leave without having to talk to anyone. But God has other plans!
Walker Greystone is shocked to find his cousin Vince’s ex on the doorstep, and he’s even more surprised when he sees that she’s pregnant. When his aunt, Vince’s mom, finds out that Rebecca is expecting her late son’s child, she immediately welcomes Rebecca into their family, inviting her to stay with them. While Rebecca is reluctant to accept such kindness, and what she feels is a hand-out, it’s the best option for her and her unborn child.
Rebecca, a library of science major, has completed her master’s degree and hopes to land the part time job available at the local library. She does, and it happens to bring her closer to Walker too as he’s working on the library’s renovation. I loved how natural Walker and Rebecca’s interactions felt and that theirs is a slow burn romance. What starts out as friendship naturally leads to a sweet romance.
Walker’s attitude towards himself transforms as he begins to see himself as a child of God. Walker’s own father and grandfather left a terrible legacy behind, and some of the older townsfolk still associate him with their failings. It doesn’t matter what our earthly fathers are like. Even if they’re great, they can’t measure up to our heavenly Father, and Auguste presents this very well in the book. I appreciated the fact that people didn’t judge Rebecca because she was pregnant out of wedlock. Everyone showed the grace that we should show to all women in her case. No child is a mistake, and God has a plan for each one.
I think Love Inspired and sweet romance readers will enjoy A Family on His Doorstep for its well-written characters, cozy small town feel, and inspirational themes. I’m looking forward to more from this author!
