When her son’s new pet becomes evidence in a murder case, scrapbook store owner Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler discovers that some family secrets are worth killing for.
All eight-year-old Erik wanted for his birthday was a bird. What he got was Solo-a traumatized lovebird whose mate was recently devoured by a boa constrictor at a local pet shop.
But when Kiki learns that Solo originally belonged to Ruthie Goldman, a beloved member of their temple community who died after a brutal home invasion, she realizes this is no ordinary rescue pet.
Solo may be small, but he’s carrying big secrets-literally. X-rays reveal the tiny bird has swallowed several diamonds from the robbery that killed his previous owner. Now someone is desperately trying to track down Erik’s feathered friend, and Kiki’s family is in danger.
As Detective Chad Detweiler investigates the diamond theft that triggered Ruthie’s fatal stroke, Kiki uncovers a web of family betrayals, frozen embryos, and twisted ideas about genetic purity.
With her trademark blend of humor, heart, and small-town Missouri charm, Kiki must protect her family while helping to solve a murder that hits frighteningly close to home. Because when inheritance, infertility, and identity collide, even the most loving families can harbor deadly secrets.
“Fans of cozy mysteries will delight in this charming blend of family drama, small-town secrets, and feathered friends. Kiki Lowenstein-Detweiler proves once again that the most dangerous mysteries often begin with the most innocent questions.”
Life in St. Louis: A Guide to Clean Living (and Occasional Mystery Solving)
A Character Guest Post by Kiki Lowenstein from the Kiki Lowenstein Mystery Series
Hi Christy and fellow cozy mystery lovers!
My name is Kiki Lowenstein, and I was thrilled when I heard I could visit Christy’s wonderful blog. As someone who’s found herself in the middle of more mysteries than any mom should reasonably encounter, I’ve come to really appreciate blogs that celebrate clean, wholesome mysteries where good always triumphs in the end.
Let me tell you a bit about my life here in St. Louis. I own Time in a Bottle, the most wonderful craft store you could imagine. It’s the kind of place where creativity flows freely, friendships are formed over slow cooker recipes, and yes—occasionally murder mysteries unfold between our how-to sessions. But don’t worry, we keep things family-friendly here! (Pet friendly, too.)
What I love about my life (murder investigations aside) is how upbeat my little corner of the world is. My daughter Anya, who’s now in her teens, can come to the store after school and be surrounded by supportive adults who genuinely care about her. My coworkers are like family—there’s Clancy, a clone of Jackie Kennedy, down to the classic wardrobe and patrician ways; Nona, a plump partridge of a woman who favors floaty ensembles of chiffon and scarves; and of course, Brawny, our Scottish nanny, who is an ace crochet and knit-wit (sorry for the pun!). Even when we’re dealing with the occasional criminal, we handle our problems with compassion and brainpower rather than potshots.
The crafting community really is special that way. We look out for each other, share techniques freely, and create beautiful things together. When trouble comes our way, we face it head-on but we do it with integrity. No bad language needed—just good old-fashioned determination and problem-solving skills!
I have to say, being an amateur sleuth has taught me that you don’t need graphic violence, explicit sex, or adult content to create compelling mysteries. Some of my most challenging cases have involved puzzles that required careful observation, creative thinking, and an understanding of human nature. Like the time I had to figure out why someone would steal specific scrapbooking supplies, or when I discovered that the key to solving a murder was hidden in the way someone organized their photos.
What makes my mysteries special is the community aspect. Everyone knows everyone in our little corner of St. Louis, and that means motives can go back decades. Family secrets, old friendships gone wrong, business disputes—all the classic cozy mystery elements are right here among the paper punches and ribbon spools. But I insist on solving crimes in the most humane way possible.
My romantic life with Detective Chad Detweiler is also refreshingly straightforward. We’re married, happily so, and yet, we still find ourselves dealing with complex family situations. Real love is both exciting and surprising. Knowing someone has your back makes tough times more tolerable.
In my latest adventure, Die, Die, Birdie https://amzn.to/46PkAMN, I find myself in a pickle that requires all my crafting-honed detective skills. Without giving anything away, I can promise you it has all the elements Christy’s readers love: a tight-knit community, quirky characters, a puzzle that’ll keep you guessing, and a satisfying resolution where the good guys win and relationships grow stronger.
I think what drew me to cozy mysteries as a reader (yes, I read them too—especially when I need to figure out how other amateur sleuths handle tricky situations!) is that they remind us that the world is a fundamentally good place. Even when bad things happen, there are always people out there who are willing to stand up for what’s right, support their friends, and work together to make things better.
To all of Christy’s readers who love clean, cozy mysteries: thank you for supporting stories that prove you can have excitement, intrigue, and compelling characters without compromising your values. The cozy mystery community is as warm and welcoming as the crafting community, and I’m honored to be part of both!
Keep reading those wonderful cozies. Remember: sometimes the best mysteries are hiding right in your own neighborhood. They are waiting for someone with the right combination of curiosity, kindness, and craft supplies to solve them!
Warmly yours, Kiki Lowenstein
P.S. – If you decide to check out Die, Die, Birdi,e https://amzn.to/46PkAMN I promise it’s every bit as clean and cozy as Christy would want. No bad language, no graphic content, only good old-fashioned mystery solving with a healthy dose of scrapbooking wisdom thrown in!
