In a village steeped in secrets, one woman’s past is the key to solving a murder.

Olivia Redmond thought she’d left danger behind in blitzed-out London. But the quiet Cotswold village of Chipping Ford offers little refuge–especially when a local gossip turns up dead. With a baby to care for and the villagers turning frosty, Olivia’s only ally is a young bobby overwhelmed by his first murder case.

As a former newspaper reporter and covert asset for Britain’s intelligence chief, Olivia knows how to uncover the truth. The deeper she digs, the uglier it gets: blackmail, betrayal, and decades of whispered sins. And as the village closes ranks, Olivia must choose–keep the peace or expose the secrets that could shatter everything.

Perfect for readers of historical mysteries with sharp heroines and tangled moral landscapes, Deadly Village is the exciting thirteenth book in the World War II mystery Deadly Series. If you like research based history and clean reads, then you’ll love USA Today Bestselling Author Kate Parker’s page-turning mystery.

My Review of Deadly Village

The Deadly Series by Kate Parker is everything I love in a historical cozy mystery series! The latest book, Deadly Village, had me turning the pages well into the night!

Now that Olivia (Livvy) is a mother, she’s staying put and not letting ANYONE send her out on assignment. However, she is put out by her father, whom she’s been living with since her and her husband’s London flat was bombed, since he can’t handle the noise of a newborn. Livvy’s good friend Esther, whose father happens to be Livvy’s newspaper boss, is happy to have Olivia and her new baby, Stevie, stay in her home in the village of Chipping Ford, located in the idyllic Cotswolds.

Predictably, people are people wherever you go, and that includes murderers! Livvy expected to have a quiet stay, but as fate would have it, she is dumped into a murder investigation just because she happens to have a good camera (well, and experience in solving murders). She’s roped into taking crime scene photos and then into investigating since the local police officer doesn’t have the experience needed to solve a murder.

I just loved Deadly Village so much! Though I haven’t personally been to the Cotswolds, I’ve watched many television shows that are set there or feature a Cotswolds village in some way. It’s the perfect setting for this village murder to take place.

A number of suspects with varied motives pop up during the investigation, and I couldn’t decide which one was guilty until near the end. The author drops a number of clues to lead you down different paths. That made this a very interesting and enjoyable mystery to solve!

I also enjoyed the day to day activities that the author added to the novel because they made it more realistic. Having had two new babies over 20 years ago, I still remember the sleepless nights, the teething, and the exhaustion that poor Olivia endures. She’s very fortunate to have so many women around to help! I don’t have a green thumb, but I think that had I lived during that time, I’d have developed one. It was a blessing for those living in the country to be able to grow their own produce. I can’t imagine living in a city and relying only on my ration cards. I found it interesting that clothing was rationed too. I enjoyed learning about the clothing swaps that the women held. That saved them a great deal since they could save the ration cards for clothes that they couldn’t swap for.

I highly recommend Deadly Village. The combination of the realistic day to day village life and the complexity of mystery solving made Deadly Village all the more entertaining! It has characters who are relatable and realistic. The setting is completely charming, and the mystery takes some skillful clue gathering! 5 stars for Deadly Village and the Deadly series!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About Kate Parker

Kate Parker has long wanted to build a time travel machine. However, after several false starts, she gave up and created time travel by going back in time inside her books. Since she’s fond of murder mysteries, it is probably best that all of her travel is inside books or police from various ages would be hunting her. When not recreating old time buildings and fashions, she can be found with a modern computer and modern air conditioning in North Carolina with her daughter and a 115 lb. puppy who could just crash through any time barrier.
