Keeping the kids entertained on the weekends can be expensive. But there are loads of things you can do that won’t break the bank. If you’re after some inspiration for fun, budget-friendly activities, look no further.
Take a hike
Fall is here, and it’s a beautiful time of year to get out and about and enjoy the local scenery. Taking a hike is great for your minds and bodies. It’s also a fantastic way to spend time together. If you have young kids, you could set up a treasure hunt and take a picnic. If you have older children, you can rent some bikes or kayaks and get your pulses racing. You don’t have to spend anything to appreciate the views and enjoy a fun-packed adventure.
Movie night
Going to the movies frequently can get expensive, especially once you’ve paid for snacks and drinks. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, host movie night at home. Get the blankets and pillows out, snuggle up, and choose a DVD. Look online for pizza offers, and stock up on popcorn and candy. This is a great option for wet weekends when it’s cold and miserable outside.
Hit the museums
Some kids assume that museums are boring. But if you choose the right ones, you can actually enjoy a really fun day out. Look for child-friendly galleries and museums with interactive displays and exhibits. Many museums don’t charge for entry, and they offer special events for kids. Search online for details on workshops, quizzes, and practical demonstrations.
Host a playdate
Are your kids moaning that they’re bored? If so, the chances are that parents all over the neighborhood are experiencing the same dilemma. If you don’t want to spend money on going to a theme park or the zoo, why not host a playdate instead? Call some of your mom friends, and invite the kids over. You can put out some yard games if the weather’s nice or do some creative activities indoors.
Go on a nature walk
Fall is a perfect season to go on a nature walk. At this time of year, the trees lose their leaves, and there are plenty of animals out and about. Nature trails are a fantastic way to teach kids about the changing seasons. You can also encourage them to learn more about wildlife, plants, and the weather. Wrap up warmly, and keep your eyes peeled for frogs leaping around ponds or ants climbing up tree trunks. Collect some colorful leaves and acorns. If you’re feeling creative, you could make a display for the wall when you get home.
Parents are always under pressure to keep the kids entertained on the weekends. You may feel like you have to spend money to ensure your kids have fun, but this isn’t the case. There are plenty of budget-friendly activities you can try rain or shine. Think about what you like doing, make use of offers, and take advantage of the scenery right outside your door.

Walks and visits to museums are already on our list of things to do as a family. Thanks for the other suggestions.
