Living a Healthier Lifestyle
Living a healthier lifestyle can often lead people down different paths. For some of us it means looking after our physical health, and for others of us it is more of a focus on our mental health. So, with that in mind, let’s take a look at some the changes we might want to make in our lives to focus on getting both physical and mental health benefits from daily life. Remember, even small changes in different areas of life will be hugely beneficial to us in the long term.
General Health
If we are going to look at the role daily life plays on our well-being, we should talk about the broader subject of health. There are many things that can go into our general health and fitness. We could end up spending years trying to find the perfect plan. However, there are some basic things that we can all do to make sure that we are living our best lives.
One of those things is getting regular checkups with your doctor, dentist, optician and hearing specialist. These all might seem like small, unimportant things. But in the long run, having a full medical history is super beneficial.
Our diets
Another aspect to living a healthier lifestyle is ensuring we are getting enough exercise and are eating a healthy diet. Now, I’m not talking about skipping from fad diet to fad diet. No. That’s never good! Make sure you are getting a balanced diet that includes the six essential nutrient food groups that your body needs to thrive.
They are as follows:
- Carbohydrates
- Fats
- Proteins
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Water
They all play a vital role in making sure our bodies are healthy and operating to the optimum levels in our daily lives.
Exercise
But diet is only half the battle, and ensuring we are exercising is the other thing to remember. According to the Mayo Clinic, living a healthier lifestyle means getting a minimum of 150 minutes of aerobic exercise and three days of strength training in each week. That’s equal to just over three hours of workouts a week. This a lot more feasible than some of the fitness plans and routines that so-called experts may be pushing.
If you’re not sure of what this means, here is a closer look:
- Aerobic
This simply refers to any exercise that focuses on your cardiovascular conditioning. So things like running, cycling and swimming would all fall under this category. Some people find it helpful to be a part of groups and others prefer to go solo, but just as long as you are getting your heart pumping then you are fine.
- Strength
The aim of strength training is to use resistance based workouts that encourage muscular contraction with the purpose of building strength and anaerobic endurance. You don’t need to be lifting heavy weights and looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger to be getting the most out of strength conditioning. Just focus on things like push ups, squats and lunges. These use your own body weight as resistance.
Mental Health
The above tips for a healthier lifestyle mostly focus on our physical health, though exercise is good for our mental health as well. But what do we need to look at to encourage a happier lifestyle?
Career
Well, one of the things that the majority of people would like to change about their lives is the negative impact their career has. So with that thought, let’s take a look at some of the ways we can improve our work lives. No one wants to live each day filled with hours in a job that brings you down.
Here are a few ways for living a healthier lifestyle in our careers:
Education
One of the best ways that we can be happier in our careers is by looking for the help of education services. Depending on your situation is, there are options out there to help you get the most out of your career. You might want to stay within your industry and progress, or you might want to change careers completely.
Nurses, for example, can go from being an RN to BSN online in a quicker time frame than traditional education. And that is just one example of how technology can help us advance in our careers or change them.
Freelance
For anyone looking to supplement their income or transition their career without education, then looking into economy style work is a good way to go. Companies like Fiverr and Upwork allow you to put to work the skills you have built up over the years in areas like copy-writing and communications. Or for those looking for a full-time job that fits their own schedule, things like driving with Uber will give you the time to make money without being in a nine-to-five job.
These are just a few things to keep in mind while you’re transitioning to a healthier lifestyle. What have you done to improve your general and mental health lately? If you haven’t done anything, just do it!
