“Beekeeper Boelts infuses her narrative with both appropriate vocabulary and empathy…Dominguez accurately depicts apiary equipment and practices in her friendly cartoons, and she peoples the story with a diverse cast not typically seen in kids’ books about beekeeping. . . Could be just the ticket for turning bee-phobes into beekeepers.” – Kirkus Reviews
Kaia and the Bees
by Maribeth Boelts and Illustrated by Angela Dominguez
Age Range: 4 – 8 years
Grade Level: Preschool – 3
Hardcover: 40 pages
Publisher: Candlewick (March 10, 2020)
The author of Those Shoes and an award-winning illustrator team up for the story of a girl who tries to overcome her fear of bees to see how amazing they are.
Kaia is the brave type. Like hottest-hot-pepper brave. But there is one thing that scares her: BEES! And right now, thousands of bees live on her roof because Kaia’s dad is a beekeeper. Her dad says that the world needs bees and that’s why they are beekeepers. But only he goes on the roof, not Kaia — unless she can find a way to be the brave girl she always says she is.
Against a sunny city setting, author Maribeth Boelts and illustrator Angela Dominguez depict Kaia’s small courageous steps — and her tiny insect neighbors — with great empathy and charm. Buzzing with storytime potential, Kaia and the Bees is an honest and relatable tale about bravery and compassion, as well as the importance of bees to our world.
My review of Kaia and the Bees
Kaia and the Bees is an adorable book about a little girl who is very brave…except when it comes to bees. And that’s a problem since her dad is a beekeeper! When Kaia tells her friends that she’s a beekeeper, they’re very impressed…until she gets scared of a bee flying around. Kaia is determined to beat her fear. Will she beat her fear or will she always be afraid of bees? Your kids will love finding out in Kaia and the Bees!
I love how this book deals with the fear of bees. I’m sure a lot of us are still scared of them! Bees are very necessary to our ecosystem, and this book talks about how bees pollinate fruits and vegetables. We need bees! You and your child will love reading this together. The illustrations are wonderful. I really love the detail the illustrator adds to make the book feel homey.

I love bees from a distance as I know they are good for our environment.
For years when I had my home and flower garden I would watch the bee move from flower to flower. I got so I planted the flowers that they liked.
We have someone that collects bees on our property. He gives us honey.
I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS A YOUNG GIRL….I WAS WALKING BY MY GRANDFATHER’S BEE HIVES AND THE NEXT THING I KNOW I WAS ALMOST COVERED BY BEES….THEY DO STING AND IT DOES HURT….BUT THEY WERE PUT ON EARTH FOR A REASON…BUT IT WAS NOT TO STING A LITTLE GIRL.
Oh my goodness! I would have been traumatized!
My dad wanted to raise bees when I was young but never did. I find bees very interesting.
We just installed a literacy reading room in our laundry. I would love to put your book in the selection of readings!
I enjoy watching bees from a distance. I do like to eat honey on occasion.
I avoid bees if I see one but it’s interesting how they make honey and how its collected.
I like honey but not the bees!
I love the bees. No bees, no food!
We get our honey from local beekeepers.
I try to plant bee friendly flowers in my garden! We, also, buy local honey every year for allergy prevention!
Bees generally don’t bother me at all.
If a bee gets to close to me, I’ll move away.
I buy local honey whenever I get the chance. I plant butterfly and bee gardens at my house.
I don’t like bees but I do like buying local honey!
There is a beekeeper who lives 2 doors down. He seems weird so I don’t buy honey from him but I do buy raw honey from stores like Home Goods, Marshalls etc
We’re doing our best to help the bees (including letting the dandelions grow) and we don’t use pesticides in our yards.
When I was seven years old, I remember that I was in the garden of my cousin’s. He said that he wanted to kill all the bees in the world because they stung him before. I thought it was pretty funny back then. Now that we are all mature, we don’t say things like that. I found out that bees are very important to us. Without bees, humans may not even be alive. For example, bees are essential for plants and without the help of bees, plants wouldn’t be growing as fast. I also learned that after a bee stings you, they die. So basically, they are risking their life to cause you pain. It’s pretty sad if you think about it. I really think bees are so cute, although I would not like to touch one. They are just like sunflowers! So we need to protect bees! Also, I like honey. I used to drink hot water with honey.
Yes, we do! I like honey bees but not yellow jackets!
