The spring has arrived and with it there has been a boom in your garden. Suddenly everything has come to life. This is the start of many months of sunshine and garden enjoyment, but watch out, lurking in the undergrowth are many potential household pests that you’ll want to defend your home against. Here’s what to look out for and what to do.
ANTS
Ants are one of the most common household pests in summer and they can be quite destructive, especially carpenter ants that get into the wood and eat it. However, there is a way to control with the right habits and efforts. Keeping the ants out should be your main concern.
It is also fairly easy to do this. When you bring home groceries put it away immediately so it doesn’t encourage any ants. You also need to clean crumbs up immediately and make sure you wash your dishes after use.
COCKROACHES
Cockroaches are not very pleasant, and an infestation is not something you want to contend with at any time. Unfortunately they are plentiful in the summer months and can easily get into your home and start nesting. Cockroaches spread disease and are hard to kill.
If you hear a creaking sound in your walls or you spot a cockroach on your kitchen floor it’s something you want to deal with right away. Unfortunately the only way to get rid of them is by contacting a pest control agency in your area.
MOTHS
You might be enjoying the sight of butterflies in your garden during the day but when the night falls there cousins are making their way into your home in search of the light and something nice to nibble on. That could well be your curtains or your clothes in drawers and wardrobes.
Moths aren’t very different to control if you find you have too many in your home. Unlike cockroaches you don’t need a pest control service, simply use a food or pantry moth trap with pheromones to attract the moths and trap them humanely.
RODENTS
Creatures that qualify as rodents include mice and rats. You might own a mouse or a rat as a pet but wild ones are quite different. Wild rodents like to nest in warm dry homes where they breed and have a source of food. Apart from that they spread disease and chew on wires.
If you only have a small problem with some mice you can easily use some humane traps to catch and release them. If the problem is more severe you will need a pest control service to come in and eliminate them.
SPIDERS
Like ants there are many species of spider worldwide. In the tropical regions there are ones with fangs and hairy legs that can bite and cause fatal conditions. Luckily those aren’t the kind you need to contend with in your garden this summer.
The spiders in your home ears are likely to be small house spiders in search of a corner to make a web and catch some food. If you have too many and it’s become an issue you can solve the problem by eliminating the food source. In this case it will be small bugs.
