Accepting second best is good for her career, but first-grade teacher, Retta Curt, delays signing up for the disappointment. Given two weeks to reconsider her contract, she retreats to Gram’s cottage on Moon Lake, the last place she felt contentment. But the cottage is derelict; Cousin Julie, distant; childhood beaux, Dean, bitter; and Sweet Picks, the family ice cream stand, in danger of folding. Magruder, a surly newcomer, is buying and then neglecting properties until nothing remains of the idyllic lakeside community she remembers. When vandals target Sweet Picks, Retta’s dreams to recapture her happy childhood collapse, and the return to Moon Lake becomes a decision worse than accepting her teaching contract. Star-crossed, can she save the family business and rediscover happiness, or is Retta destined for a second-best future?
Author Interview
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I love early mornings, lazy afternoons, and good friends. Among my favorite haunts are used book stores and garage sales. Besides writing, I try to stay active in community affairs such as food drives, clothing collections, and ringing in my church bell choir. Also, because I have a background in technology, I’m called upon to help with streaming events and supply computer advice—which is a laugh because things change daily, and a six-year-old knows what I know.
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing for many years, although serious writing with the intent to publish didn’t happen until I retired from my full-time career. I started writing short stories and had some luck. That success spurred me to try my hand at novel-length manuscripts. I love the longer pieces and the time to develop a more powerful, deeper story.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
I have always been a reader. Then one day, after finishing a book by a favorite author, I thought, I can do that. So, I sat down and started to write a novel. Eight years later, I finally had a decent manuscript. Admittedly, they no longer take that much sweat and tears. Cozy mysteries are fun, both to read and to write.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
Truthfully, I will read anything. However, I like to relax with a book. Cozy mysteries are entertaining without the gore and over–the–top violence in other genres. I love the “feel good” tingle after reaching the end of a cozy. I’m currently reading Sun, Sand and Slaughter by Emerald Finn.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
My favorite place to write is at home. About ten years ago, I converted a bedroom into an office. Each wall is a different shade of deep pink. A scarred executive desk practically fills the space under a double-wide, double-hung set of windows. The view overlooks a sun-bleached, weather-worn, wooden fence, and a bird feeder stands between it and the house. It’s a great place to ponder the next scene of my WIP.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
On my desk sits a desktop computer with a large monitor and printer. A framed picture from a cruise, my sister and I in vintage saloon-girl garb and assorted family pictures are on a shelf. The photos share the space with cherished gifts I’ve received from friends, a hummingbird in stained glass, a lobster Christmas tree decoration, an angel figurine, and a cardinal in a nest.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
I don’t remember a favorite book, but I loved—make that devoured—The Hardy Boys books.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I enjoy and purchase all three. I love to listen to an audiobook while driving, and nothing travels better than an e-reader loaded with books. However, if I’m at home, I prefer a physical book’s feel, smell, and heft.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
I spent great summers in the Midwest, enough time that rural small-towns and barnyards remain dear to me. I write the Rory Naysmith Mysteries, which take place in northeastern Nebraska. Sign me up; I’d love to write while living in the area and schmoozing with the neighbors.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I belong to two critique groups and three writing organizations. The time spent with these talented people is essential to me for their support and continued encouragement. In addition, being surrounded by the arts and artists is most satisfying, whether they are writers, poets, or pole-dancers.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I just finished the audiobook edition of Double Dipped. Production was a great adventure, and I hope to do the same with The Rory Naysmith Mysteries. And the third book in that series is almost ready to head to the publisher. Hopefully, the publication will follow after the first of the year.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!

About Terry Korth Fischer
Terry Korth Fischer writes short stories, memoirs, and mysteries. Her debut mystery, Gone Astray, introduced Detective Rory Naysmith, a seasoned city cop relocated to small-town Winterset, Nebraska. The Rory Naysmith Mysteries continued with Gone Before, January 2022. Transplanted from the Midwest, Terry lives in Houston, Texas, with her husband and two guard cats. When not writing, she loves reading, gardening, and basking in sunshine. Yet, her heart often wanders to the country’s heartland, where she spent a memorable—ordinary but charmed—childhood.
