Paranormal Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Hawthorne, Florida, USA
Independently Published
Publication date : August 28, 2026
Print length : 204 pages
Paperback
When the main sponsor of a regional potions competition is found dead in her hotel suite, the evidence is almost too neat: a rare allergy, a suspicious vial, and Lena Knox’s best friend standing over the body.
Faye didn’t do it. But someone went to a lot of trouble to make it look like she did.
Lena – green witch and reluctant amateur sleuth – isn’t about to let her best friend take the fall. Not when the killer is still in the hotel, the suspect list includes half the potions industry, and the motive turns out to be tangled up in a family secret Faye didn’t even know she had.
With her familiar, Thorn, offering opinions she didn’t ask for, and her ex-boyfriend inconveniently working the case, Lena is going to need more than potions to untangle this one.

To: Graciella Porfortuna, Competition Chairwoman
Dear Ms. Porfortuna,
The properties of herbs have fascinated me since I was a child. I brewed my first potion at the age of eight – a simple color changing elixir which I then fed to the family cat. Turning Felix pink made my mother laugh, but Felix was not amused. Luckily the effects wore off rather quickly, much to my disappointment and Felix’s relief.
After that I was more careful with my tisanes and potions. But the fascination remained.
Now, I am enrolled in my final semester at Shadow Hills University. My degree is in Botanical Pharmacology, with a concentration in Ethnobotanical Thaumaturgy, and I plan to write my thesis on hybridization and its impact on efficacy and longevity in spells. A visit to the Alnwick Poison Garden in Northumberland, Great Britain would provide invaluable research opportunities for that thesis.
The opportunity to participate in this competition is an honor I am determined to repay with my future work in our community. It’s the kind of chance I’d hate to fumble — and given my early endeavors, I’d say I have a bit to make up for. Acceptance into this competition would give me incomparable insights into a world I fully intend to make my home.
Thank you for your time and attention,
Sincerely,
Lena Knox
