With a sickening feeling, Mandie approached them.

“What’s the matter?”

     The bridal party turned around, and Holly lifted her

quivering chin, her eyes red, tears streaking down her face.

     “My parents are at the airport. Their flights are canceled.

Snoqualmie and Stevens passes are closed. There’s no way

they can get here by tomorrow.” She hiccuped a sob.

     “Oh dear! Um,” Mandie paused, “let me see what I can

do.”

     Holly nodded, and the bridal party went back to

comforting her.

     The knot forming in Mandie’s belly hardened as she

rushed to the ranch office. Halfway there, she stopped. If

she wanted this job, she couldn’t whine around to Sydney.

No, she had to prove her worth. Instead, she rushed into the

kitchen where the cooks were busy with lunch preparations.

     “Shirley, I left my phone in the loft. Can I use yours to

check the weather?”

     “You sure can. It’s over there on the counter.” Shirley

rolled out cookie dough.

     At the stove, Paula stirred what smelled like a pot of

beef stew. Fresh rolls stood on the counter. Mandie turned

off Scotty McCreery singing “Christmas Comin’ Round

Again” so she could think and pulled up the weather app.

The forecast specified snow all day and into the next.

     “What’s going on out there?” Shirley patted the dough.

     “Poor Holly’s frazzled. Her parents are stuck at the

airport, and both passes are closed.”
