My Review of Coordinates of Death
Ever since I read Darlene Turner’s Echoes of Darkness, I’ve been excited for another book in the Arctic Protectors Series. This series features a group called the Canadian Watcher Squad (CWS), and Coordinates of Death is just as good as Echoes of Darkness! The great thing about this series is that you can read each book as a standalone. What unites the books is the Arctic setting and the squad.
This book features Kordell Greene, a member of the CWS, and Corporal Aurora Hunt, who is a police officer in Sweetwood Falls, Yukon. When a murder takes place in Sweetwater Falls, it looks an awful lot like the work of the Shadow Box Killer. However, SBK has been silent for the past two years. Aurora (Rory) is convinced it’s SBK, but some members of her station think it must be a copycat. Taunting Aurora is part of SBK’s game. She’s not allowed to have help from the police, so she calls Kordell (Kord) who was a friend in their younger days. He’s not police, but he’s highly skilled as are the other members of the CWS. Both Kord and Rory had very rough childhoods, but I won’t give any spoilers about that because it plays into the story!
Coordinates of Death is extremely suspenseful! SBK is a complete psychopath and loves playing with Rory’s and Kord’s minds. I can’t imagine doing the jobs they do let alone doing it in subzero temperatures, blinding snow, and feet of already accumulated snow! The clues that they find along the way are disturbing, and they cement in Rory’s mind that this is indeed SBK and not a copycat.
This book deals with the reality of evil in the world. Rory is a woman of faith, but Kord can’t quite wrap his head around the fact that a loving God allows such awful things to happen. I think that’s the question many people have. God gave us free will, and unfortunately, there are many people who use that free will to commit atrocious acts. Eventually Kord embraces the faith in Christy that Rory, Kord’s father and brothers have. I appreciated how Turner used Kord’s struggle with this since it is something people ask those of us who trust in the Lord. Our thoughts aren’t God’s thoughts. What Satan means for evil, God meant for good. These are things we’ve got to tell ourselves over and over.
I’m looking forward to seeing which sibling Turner chooses to write about next! I highly recommend Coordinates of Death to those of you who read Christian romance that’s a little edgier and darker than Turner’s Love Inspired Suspense books. If you enjoy books by Jessica R. Patch and Jaime Jo Wright, you’ll love this book!
