Old Town Virginia’s entertaining guru and occasional sleuth Sophie Winston – a young Martha Stewart in the making – juggles Fourth of July fireworks, a houseful of guests, and homicide in the latest Domestic Diva culinary mystery from New York Times bestselling author Krista Davis.
With a big crowd descending on her Northern Virginia home, it’s a good thing event planner Sophie Winston is an expert at entertaining. Whipping up patriotic pastries is as easy as pie for her, though meeting the man her widowed Aunt Melly just impulsively married in Las Vegas is a little more awkward. Especially when Melly’s longtime, now-heartbroken secret admirer is there too, which could lead to some fireworks.
But the house party really gets explosive when Sophie’s favorite tour guide falls victim to a killer—and evidence points to Sophie’s own father. Will DNA really incriminate her dad? And what’s the real story with her new uncle-by-marriage and the mysterious pal he’s brought along with him? Some of the secrets Sophie’s discovering are raising flags—and while the police department casts suspicion on her father, she has to declare her independence as a detective to find the real culprit, and serve justice along with her red, white, and blue cupcakes . . .
Includes delicious recipes, fabulous decorating tips, and easy entertaining hacks!
Character Guest Post
Hi y’all! My name is Dolly Peabody. People around Old Town know me because my family has lived here in the same house for generations. I love this old place. When I walk into the dining room, I always see it the way my momma set the table for Christmas. It’s still the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen. Back in those days, the family was prosperous, and Momma loved bringing out the fine china and silver.
I’ve been married a few times. I lived in this house with my parents when my first husband went off to Vietnam. Sadly, he returned in a casket. I often wonder what my life would have been like if he had lived. We were so young when we married. My proper mother nearly had heart failure when my brothers acted up at my wedding. But that’s not why I’m here.
It’s important for you to know that I had two more husbands after him. The second one was electrocuted by a power pole that fell. And the third one crashed his plane. There’s been a lot of sadness and tears in my home. My children are grown and don’t live in Old Town, so it’s just me rambling around in the old house remembering how things were.
Now, everyone knows that old floors creak. And stairs are prone to squeaking. That always sounds louder at night. I sleep in a pretty (if I say so myself) bedroom on the second floor. Most nights I keep the windows open at least a crack. I love hearing the city sounds outside. People laughing, some a little too tipsy! Children running along the sidewalks. The occasional ambulance siren. I always say a little prayer then for whoever needs the ambulance. My friends think I should close the windows, but to me, those sounds are comforting.
What isn’t comforting are the voices and creaking stairsteps I hear in the night. They’re inside my house. I know, I know, you’re thinking I’m an old gal and imagining things. Well, you’re just like the police! I don’t like them anymore. Every time I call, they act like I’m an old kook and I resent that. They’re paid to assist the public. And it doesn’t matter that I’m old. It’s their job to help me. Do you know, one of them called my daughter and told her it was time they put me in a home for old people! The nerve! Well, I’m not going anywhere. But those noises in the night aren’t either.
