Darkness covered her, a smothering black from which she’d never recover.

Julia yanked the tangled sheets off her body, unwrapping her leg from the tourniquet she’d created in her sleep. Sweat covered her face and chest.

Five thirteen a.m. Too early to be awake, but she wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep now. The sinister sight from her first day in town—images of the lifeless body—swirled with her own past to create the haunting nightmare. Nikki’s death. The whumpf of an avalanche. A man’s final words before life left his body.

Her stomach clenched. She checked her phone. A notification from the alert she’d set up. A new headline. She straightened and clicked on the link. Man in Silverberg Death Identified as Hank Stringber, Ouray Plumber.

She read through the details. No next of kin mentioned. Still no cause of death.

She poured herself some coffee, and the mug lent its warmth to her cold hands as she sat at the desk. She sipped the dark brew, ready to write about yesterday’s adventure. The steam rose into the air above the table. Plain black coffee percolated from a basic pot. It reminded her of her mom, who’d always brewed the coffee at home. When Julia had first started drinking it, she’d pour a quarter cup of coffee, double the milk, and add two big tablespoons of sugar. Now she preferred a simple cup with a dash of cream.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. Excitement about an idea mingled with the fear of failing at a new endeavor.
