Photographer Bobbie Brooks vows to leave the investigation to the professionals until a tearful plea from a friend causes her to shift her focus from merriment to murder. The Stonebridge Keep it Snappy Shutter Club is on another case as Bobbie plunges into the world of herbal poisons and masked motives. The truth is concealed in the details captured through her lens. But as everything comes into focus, Bobbie finds herself in danger once again. Can she unmask the killer before the killer zooms in on her?

Interview with Kara Lacey

Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!

Thanks so much for inviting me!

Tell us a little about yourself.

A few years ago, after taking early retirement from a finance job at a university in Boston, my husband and I packed it up and moved to Vermont. Best decision ever. Now I wander around my newly adopted home with my camera, gathering inspiration for my Camera Club Mysteries.

How long have you been writing?

All my life. I used to write stories as a kid. Then for many, many years, I only journaled. I started taking writing seriously about seven years ago. It’s never too late to pick up that pen (so to speak).

Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?

When I was young, I wanted to write a book. But somewhere along the way, the idea got pushed to the back of my mind. It wasn’t until a few years ago that a character came to me. She wasn’t fully formed, but I knew she was middle-aged, a photographer, and lived in Vermont. Then, one day while enjoying a cup of tea with my mom, I said, from out of nowhere, “I’m going to write a mystery.” My favorite genre is mystery. And while I hadn’t specifically planned to write cozy, I’ve been told I have a cozy voice. The rest, as they say, is history.

Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?

I love reading cozy mysteries as well as more traditional mysteries. There’s something about the way the characters and sense of community carry over from book to book in a series. I also enjoy reading Rom-Coms. Right now I’m reading an ARC by Annie McEwen—No Bones About It—the fifth book in her Northwoods Mysteries.

Do you have a favorite place to write?

My favorite place to write is on my living room couch, looking at the mountains through my back slider. If I have a lot of written notes, I’ll move to my kitchen table (again, looking out at the mountains).

What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?

I have a desk that I rarely use, but when I do, it’s because it has a second monitor. It also has plenty of space to spread out reference books and notes.

What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?

Oh, good question! It was probably one of the Beverly Cleary books. Who doesn’t love a good story about Ramona and Beezus?

Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?

I like them all!

E-books are probably the most comfortable to read (and least expensive)—

But there’s nothing quite like a stack of physical books—

And if I didn’t have audiobooks, I’d never want to fold laundry or garden or drive any distance in the car…

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

I don’t even have to think about this answer. Southern France or Crete—not that I’m actually trying to talk my husband into moving there or anything… (Little by little, I’m wearing him down.)

What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?

Initially, I’d say it was Louise Penny. No one brings a setting to life quite like she does. I seriously want to jump into her books and visit Three Pines. After I started writing, I started meeting so many other talented writers, and I’d say each of them influenced me in their own way.

Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?

This was one of my biggest surprises! I guess I thought writing was a solo endeavor. I’ve met so many wonderful people through writing. I belong to a few writing and/or critique groups. The mystery-writing community is incredibly supportive!

Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?

Last month, I submitted my final revisions for the third book in my Camera Club Mysteries to my publisher. It still needs proofreading, but the real work is done. I’m excited about this story. It’s Bobbie’s first big photography assignment—a holiday wedding gone wrong.

I’ve started plotting the fourth in the series, and I’m happy with where it’s headed. But I have an idea for a series of short Rom-Cozies I’d like to try my hand at before diving into drafting book 4.
