My Review of Targeted in the Swamp
Targeted in the Swamp by Kerry Johnson is absolutely fantastic! It’s a Christian Romantic Suspense involving Laurel Bell, a wildlife photography ranger, and police sergeant Heath Calhoun. Laurel also happens to be in WITSEC, something she can’t tell anyone no matter the circumstances. This becomes a huge problem after Laurel is attacked by a masked assailant while waiting in an Allegheny swamp area for Molly Calhoun, Heath’s sister, to document a primitive campsite. Thankfully, Heath arrives in time to rescue Laurel. However, when it comes time to get her statement, he can tell she’s holding something back. That something is the fact that when she was nine, she witnessed her father’s murder by a crime syndicate. Now it seems she’s being targeted, and she deduces that it must have to do with what happened all those years ago.
This book had me hooked right from the start, and I read the entire thing in a day. I love WITSEC themed books because the criminals are always so determined and usually led by a very powerful boss. Laurel’s backstory is so captivating. I mean, I’d never wish it on a real person, but in fiction, it’s great! Heath was familiar to me from the other books in this series, but you do not need to read them first! He has had some terrible things happen in his life too. Laurel and Heath both went through times when they doubted God’s faithfulness, but they found their way back to Him. Grief often does this to even the strongest of Christians. Why does God let us go through storms? We’ve got to remember that this is a broken world, yet God will always be with us through the storm. Heath and Laurel depend on God to get them through what they are facing in this book. I enjoy reading this type of book since God’s grace shines through even in the darkest of circumstances.
I highly recommend Targeted in the Swamp! The page-turning suspense, layered characters, atmospheric setting, and theme of reliance on God make this a must-read!
