Have you been keeping up with my summer fun series posts? In my Summer Fun Part One I shared about how time flies and the movies we’ve been seeing. In Part Two I shared about seeing Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour. This week I’m talking about movie sequels!
Paul Blart Mall Cop 2
Last week, I wanted to be sure my son got involved in our dollar movie days. We went to see Paul Blart, Mall Cop 2. I am SO glad I only paid a dollar to see this…well, $3 if you count the kids’ tickets. This movie was just nothing like the first one. Remember how hilarious the first Mall Cop movie was? I’ve watched that one many times. This one was just not at all funny. The theater was pretty full and seriously no one was laughing. There may have been one or two instances that were chuckle worthy, but other than that it was a bomb.
It makes me quite sad when movie sequels don’t live up to the first movie! I think if you can’t make a good sequel, then leave it at one movie people! There ARE instances when the sequels of movies rock and are as good as or even better than the first movies. Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of all of the Star Wars movies. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is an awesome sequel, but the third and fourth are just okay. Of course, this does not apply to the Harry Potter movies because they are all based on different books and aren’t really sequels, and they are all amazing 🙂
So do you have any favorite movie sequels? How about ones that totally bombed? I would love to hear!
Update June 2018:
Wow, this was a long time ago! Thankfully, my photo skills have improved, but I’ve got to keep this here just for a reminder to myself of how far I’ve come! There have been lots of new Star Wars movies since I wrote this post! Have you seen them? We loved SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY! If you haven’t seen it yet, go while it’s still in the theatres! You can preorder it too.

a few years ago, we bought the James Bond series and I could watch most of those over and over and over again (and I have). I agree that Hollywood should just call it a day sometimes.
Thank you so much for the lovely write-up. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you over these past five years and I am so fortunate to call you a friend. Here’s to many more great years.

I am ashamed to say, I’ve never watched a James Bond movie! We have a couple and Kyle has watched them. I am sure I would probably like them too! It is wonderful knowing you too!
I don’t generally go to movies anymore–nor do I watch TV. Of course if the Indiana Jones series is on TV I will sit there and watch every one of them–I love Harrison Ford! Actually there are a couple of series that I loved them all but can’t remember the names at the moment (senior moment here). AND we don’t have a $1.00 movie theater anymore–not even a $3.00 movie theater. I think the early bird special is now $5.00!!
Anything with Harrison Ford is usually good!!
I agree. He is one of my favorites and Indy is one of his best characters.
Generally I would answer no to that question, but I really liked the Harry Potter movies. All of them.
ME too, but I kind of categorize them all as their own movies since they each had their own book lol.
I can’t wait until I have the time to go to a movie theatre and watch what I want. Sequels usually tend to be horrible because they are trying to keep momentum alive. I really liked Hangover2 ( I like to watch dumb humor). So glad I have not watched Mall Cop 2 but on your recommendation I will watch 1.
The first one is so cute!
What a great giveaway and quite an interesting situation re movie sequels…yes or no! As I fond most sequels do not live up to their hype and only leave me disappointed that I looked so much forward in seeing the movie, only to find I should have waited for it to come out on DVD!
I totally agree! With sequels it is so hit or miss, so you better stick with the DVD.
Movie sequels are a mixed bag. When they’re great, they’re REALLY great. When they’re bad that absolutely suck. There are certain films that just shouldn’t be sequels. For example, I know Jaws is one of the most beloved movies of all time, but they should have stopped with the first one.
It’s so true. Even the Home Alone movies…the second was so so but the first was adorable. After the second…nope!
Most of the time the original is the best, but every once in a while we get a good sequel 🙂
So true!
I loved Lord of the Rings, Return of the King which is officially a sequel, but since all three were filmed at the same time you could consider them one film, shown in three parts.
I live in IL and I’m thinking of renaming it Seattle Mid-West because of all the rain we’ve gotten this year.
Oh I love those too! It’s been raining like crazy here too. We get one good day out of 7 here in OH.
Ontario – Ottawa Valley – beautiful!
The first movie is always the best, IMO. However I must say that the second movie in the string of Toby McGuire Spiderman movies was outstanding, in some ways better then the first.
I do love the Spiderman movies!
It does always seem the sequels arent the best. I am looking forward to seeing the minions, but keep hearing despicable me was better 🙁
Yes, I’ve heard the same thing. I’m sure it will be cute but just different.
I am in Wa. State and you just reminded me I need to pick up Paul Blart-my son loved that movie
That first movie was so sweet and funny! I don’t know what happened in the second one! They waited too long and were trying too hard.
I am lucky enough to live in beautiful San Diego County in Southern California! We are going through a drought here, but things could be worse…brown is our new green 🙂
That is so true! We’ve been getting too much rain this year!
I hate when sequels aren’t as good as the original! They do have alot to live up to, quite often, but still it’s always such a let down :-(. This is a great giveway though, and I love the blogs you listed – they are some of my favourite ones too!
Thank you 🙂 Yes, why make a sequel if it’s not gonna be good….oh wait…they want our money lol.
Star Wars and Indiana Jones are also our favorite movies with sequels. Back to the Future, too. I agree with you when you said that if the movie people can’t make a good sequel, then leave it at one movie.
I love the third Back to the Future! The second was good but weird lol.
I think it almost always depends on the movie. Some movies are so good but their sequals are just crappy. But on the other hand some are really worth seeing. There are probably a handful of sequals I’ve actually liked.
I agree. There are just so very few great sequels that it is kind of not worth spending the money to see them..just wait for the DVD!
Oops hope this is open to those of based in New York City, I didn’t think to check before I entered!
I tend to think they should stop at the first one as sequels tend to get a bit ‘diluted’ to be honest and I still don’t get this make three and then do a ‘prequel’ concept to be honest!
Yes, it is open to you! I think movies really should stop at one unless they’re based on books…or maybe cartoons lol. Like Toy Story 🙂
Yeah… I’m not usually the biggest fan of movie sequels, they’re rarely as awesome as the first movie. So I tend to avoid them. Though I can’t say that for Toy Story movies! Those are all great!
Yes, those are adorable!
I am 50/50 with sequels. Some are great, some are horrible. I loved the Back to the Future sequel, but not the third one. And I LOVE Harry Potter, too!
It really does just depend which is why it is so hit and miss with your money lol.
We totally take advantage of our summer fun dollar movie days…actually it’s $2 here, but still pretty cheap. We just load up on the popcorn and .50 cent refills.
Yes, that is still a good deal!
A lot of the time it seems like the studios try to push sequels and the original directors are rarely on board. I think the Harry Potter series is one of the few examples where a bunch of different directors all did great work.
Yes, it does! And the writers are usually different as well.
There are some movies that have fantastic sequels, but there are also some films that should never have been made, let alone have sequels!! But I love all the Indiana Jones movies.
LOL true..and some movies that should never have been made have sequels….blah!
I’m trying to think of a sequel bomb and I think Hangover 2 is just bad. Same premise just a slightly different story. But the movie Horrible Bosses 2 was pretty funny…
LOL yes, some movies just need to be one movie.
what a cool thing I love movies and sometimes the sequels are even better than the original. =)
That is true…like The Empire Strikes Back 🙂
I live in Maine and am so happy it’s summer! We enjoy so many days in the beautiful weather. And for those rainy days, we end up watching lots of movies! One of my favorite sequel series is Lethal Weapon!
I have seen those, and they are good because the plots are not exactly the same!
Most of the time, yes. However, lately, I feel like movie sequels are overdone. It’s like no one can think of original ideas for movies and the same ones are being done again and it’s silly!
Totally! I think the same thing. No one is very creative apparently anymore.
I LOVE THE DIE HARD MOVIES AND OF COURSE, STAR WARS.
I only ever saw the first Die Hard movie. I should watch the others!
I haven’t seen a movie in a theater in a long time. I haven’t seen any of these.
Hope you get to go soon!
Movie sequels sometimes turn out to be great, however, if the first one was a real blockbuster, it would be difficult for the sequel to meet up to the standards of movie-goers.
That is so true! Look at Jurassic Park…the first was the only really good one!
I am in NH and love watching sequels. i get together with my girls once a week and watch videos.
That sounds so fun!
My husband and I loved the first Taken movie. We insisted our single daughter watch it. Taken 2 was not good at all. Taken 3 was better, but in my opinion, they should have just said no to parts 2 and 3.
I agree. I haven’t even seen the third yet, but I probably will if it ever gets on tv.
Some sequels are really worth seeing like those you mentioned. I also like Lord of the Rings.
I do too! I have only seen the first Hobbit movie so far though.
I like and don’t like movie sequels at the same time because I hate the feeling of waiting for what’s gonna happen next. Star Trek & Blade are my faves.
Yeah, they’re okay if you know it ends on a cliffhanger and you have to see the sequel. If they’re making it just totally different, don’t bother.
I am in Florida. It is my most favorite state to be in the whole wide world, and knock on wood I never have to leave again (I relocated once for family reasons).
I hope you don’t have to leave either!
I don’t like it when sequels don’t quite make it. I was bummed with the second dispicable me. I kinda wanted to see Mall Cop 2 but now I think I will pass.
Definitely pass on it…so not funny!
I live in NY, upstate. This year we are sticking close to home and visiting local events that bring people to our area from all over and we have never attended.
That sounds really fun! I’d like to visit upstate NY. It seems very pretty!
Sequels it all depends on the movies. I love all the Fast and Furious movies. But anything else I’d likely say no.
I still haven’t seen those! I’m sure that I’d like them.
There are some sequals that are done well. I like the Toy Story, Fast and Fuirous. But I was less impressed with Monsters U.
I haven’t seen Monsters U yet. I think they waited too long to make it.
Yes to sequels! I can’t name one exactly that I like, but I’m excited to hear that one of my favorite movies of all time, Top Gun is going to have a sequel. Can’t wait!
I didn’t know that! Wow! I wonder if he’ll be an instructor or what.
Sometimes movie sequels can be really good but sometimes it can be really terrible. Even when the reviews aren’t so good I like to give the movies a chance.
I like to see what “real” people think lol. If no one thinks it is good, it probably isn’t!
Movie sequels are a big no for me. They’re never better than the first one! But that’s just my opinion! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for stopping!
I love it when other bloggers promote bloggers. The blogging community is so super supportive, I am going to check out these blogs!
Thank you! I think it is really important!
I think it really depends on the film! Like mean girls 2 omg… Worst movie of all times!
LOL I haven’t watched it. There is NOTHING that can compare to Mean Girls!
I have to admit I liked the first Mall Cop but have not seen the second one yet. My favorite sequel was Night At The Museum. I totally love all of them ones and think they are totally funny. Thanks for sharing.
I did like the Night at the Museum movies too!
I dont mind sequels but I hate when they make a third! Why does everything have to be a trilogy these days?
I know! Then they make the third into two separate movies!
What a great giveaway! I don’t watch many movies but I have watched some movies that I wished would have a sequel to.
That is true too. Sometimes you don’t want the story to end!
It’s not very often that sequels are as good or better than the original. Mall Cop 2 did not look like it was going to be a good one. My kids loved the first one, though.
The first one is so cute…the second is just sadly disappointing.
I loved Mall Cop one. I have not seen number two yet. Star wars is one of my favorite movie franchises.
Don’t bother with the second because it is just too disappointing seeing it flop!
Sometimes I’m not a fan of Sequels, however I love all the Twilight movies haha.
I do too lol. The sequels are better than the first, though the last was just okay.
I love going to those dollar movie theaters. The experience is in the theater part right? It’s definitely fun and you know you’re saving money too! My favorite sequel is the Godfather. Never saw Mall Cop 🙁
Yes! Seeing movies on the big screen is so much fun! You need to see the first Mall Cop. It’s so cute!
I think Mulan 2 bombed (in my opinion). The first movie was so strong and inspiring and had amazing music. The 2nd one seemed so small compared to the first it almost angered me they tried to make a part 2 lol.
LOL I didn’t watch the second one…I guess I won’t now either!
They’re not sequels, but Ben and I are headed to the drive-in theater tonight on the OFFICIAL Route 66 in Illinois to see Ant Man and Inside Out. I’m taking tissues. 🙂 Loved doing this giveaway with you. Can’t wait to see who our lucky winner is!
Me too! I can’t wait to see Inside Out! The kids and I went to see Home at the cheap theater today. It’s adorable! Have fun on the OFFICIAL Rt 66!
I’m in Michigan, it’s hot today.
I am a Mom to 4 girls so with that in mind I loved Shrek and Shrek 2 but I really hated the rest of them.
Forgot to put that I am in Tennessee
I am in Virginia. They say Virginia is for Lovers.
And Virginia Beach is awesome!
I’m located in Pensacola, Florida
Nice and warm!

I’m in Ontario, Canada. Having a great summer!
