5 Side Effects of Sleeping on a Bad Mattress

There is nothing important than a good night’s sleep! But unfortunately, most of us don’t realize this and push ourselves in the misery of long-term effects of sleep deprivation. There could be a lot of reasons behind sleeplessness, but the most common reason for a low-quality sleep is inappropriate bedding, mainly, a bad mattress. This is something almost everyone knows but still somehow ignore due to laziness and at times, inability to manage funds. Sleeping on a bad mattress can adversely affect your health and result in long-term repercussions on your mind and body

Here are the consequences which you could possibly face by losing sleep from sleeping on a bad mattress:

1. Back pain

Do you wake up to severe back pain every morning? While there could be many reasons behind your back ache, studies show that a lumpy, worn-out or sagging mattress can cause long-term back pain. It can also have short-term effects of musculoskeletal pain in your neck, shoulders, spine and back.

A bad mattress doesn’t provide necessary support and forces you to sleep in unnatural positions which twists and strains your back and ligaments.

In order to have a relaxing and comfortable sleep, studies suggest that medium-firm mattresses are best. They keep your back in the right position as compared to the soft and firm ones. If you are looking to buy a new one, check out the mattress from Saatva.

2. Decreased Metabolism – A Step Towards Weight Gain

Lack of proper sleep can result in weight gain. This is because while you get a proper sleep, your metabolism rate increases which results in burning off a few calories. On the contrary, if you don’t get enough sleep, your metabolism slows down, which makes it harder for your body to burn the carbs and fats you consumed throughout the day.

Moreover, there are hormones that get affected due to irregular sleep. These are known as leptin and ghrelin which regulate our appetite. We feel full due to leptin and while we sleep, these hormones are activated and keep their levels up. However, irregular sleep patterns boost the ghrelin hormone which makes us feel hungry, causing us to eat more.

3. Memory Impairment

Nobody wants their memories faded, but if you are not getting enough sleep, you are probably going to suffer from memory related issues. In order to help improve your memory, REM stage of sleep is required. This is a deep sleep state. It is then that the memories are formed inside the brain. So if you are not getting proper sleep, there is a higher chance of memory impairment at a younger age.

4. Negative Effect on Blood pressure

Deep sleep has different stages of REM and during each stage, blood pressure gets reduced. So when you are having a peaceful sleep, your blood pressure drops down to the normal level. Avoid using bad mattress, so that your sleep cycles do not get interrupted. Otherwise, your blood pressure will not reduce properly which, in the long run, can lead to heart complications.

5. Increase in Stress Level

There could be many things that result in increased stress levels, but studies show that not being comfortable in your bed while you are asleep can increase stress levels. Stress, if ignored for a long time, can also turn into depression.

When you sleep on a bad mattress, you twist and turn without getting enough sleep which unconsciously convinces your mind that tossing is a night-time habit. This can further trigger anxiety and stress, making it harder to fall asleep. Check out more ways to help you get better sleep.
