Safely Enjoying Time on the Water with the Family
During the warmer months, spending time outdoors with the family is important. Sunshine is a natural source of vitamin D, and it promotes happy feelings. While spending time on the water with your family, safety must also be a priority.
Safety Equipment
Having the proper safety equipment on-board is vital. During emergency situations, proper equipment helps saves lives. It is a must that every member of the family, including the family dog, has a life jacket. The jacket should be properly fitted and sufficient for the age and weight of each boater. Life preservers with heavy nylon rope throws should also be on-board. Nylon rope is less resistant to damage with exposure to nature’s elements.
Every boat needs a fire extinguisher. The extinguisher should be inspected annually for safety and functionality. For larger vessels, multiple fire extinguishers should be made available.
Inspect the Boat
Prior to taking the vessel out on the water, it should undergo a complete inspection. This includes inspecting the entire body for cracks and leaks. If leaks are found, they should be fixed immediately and given the proper amount of time to cure before being exposed to water.Ensuring that the boat electronic equipment is properly functioning is also a must. This includes electrical wiring along with electronic equipment used for GPS purposes. Malfunctioning electronic components can spark a fire. Ensuring that the connections show no signs of fraying or corrosion is a must.
What to Pack in your Bag
If the family plans to spend a great deal of time on the boat, it is a good idea to pack a bag of extra items that may be needed. In this bag, you should include a basic first aid kit. Cuts and scrapes can happen from jostling around on rolling waters.
Snacks or a picnic style lunch is always a good idea. Children tend to get hungry more frequently than adults. Healthy snacks provide natural energy. Along with snacks, always bring plenty of clean drinking water.
Enjoy your time on the water with the family. Always keep your life jacks on and keep them buckled at all times. Make sure that every family member knows the rules of being on the boat to make sure it is both fun and safe.
Life jackets are life savers but the other items you mention are just as important. The last thing you want is to be unprepared and have an emergency. Thanks for sharing!
