Earlier this week, I shared three new products that were revealed at the New York Fancy Food Show. Today I’m sharing my experience making and eating Teff Porridge.

I’m sure you’ve heard the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. If you haven’t….where have you been?? When I was a little girl, I always wondered what porridge was. I knew it was some type of food obviously because otherwise Goldilocks wouldn’t have been eating it. The definition of porridge is “a dish consisting of oatmeal or another meal or cereal boiled in water or milk.” In essence, hot oatmeal is porridge, but porridge can be pretty much any grain. Using Teff gives you a lot more nutrition than many grains would.

About Teff Porridge

Teff is gluten-free, is higher in protein than wheat, is a great source of iron, calcium and amino acids. This ancient whole grain has a pleasantly sweet nutty flavor, and the small size makes it easy to digest.  Brown & white teff: Whole teff can be toasted and used to add a little crunch to salads to muffins; boiled teff can be prepared with milk or water for a sweet porridge or spiced up for a side dish.

Teff Porridge with Mixed Berries and Chia

Teff porridge is so easy to make! All you do for this delicious breakfast is make it according to the package directions. The contents of a 5 oz. box make 2 servings. Boil 2 1/2 cups of either milk or water, and then add the contents of the package. Simmer for about 20 minutes, let it sit 5 minutes, and fluff with a fork.

I made mine with milk. It has a really good flavor, and I didn’t add any sugar or spices though you could if you’d like. I just added a few sliced strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Then I added about a teaspoon of chia seeds for some extra crunch and nutrition. It was delicious and nutritious. If you have never tried this, make sure to look for it at your local store or order some directly from Pereg.
