Last month I shared how my dog, Duke, inspires me to be more. He’s made lots of new friends since he became a part of our family, and that’s made me new friends too. The weather is getting colder, and I’ve been having some “issues” (AKA I tripped on my purse strap and banged up my head, knee, toe) so Duke and I haven’t been getting our morning walks in lately. However, that hasn’t stopped us from spending time with Duke’s new friends. Inspired to be more by Milk-Bone and Duke, I’m still making the effort to show more love.
Making friends
I shared a bit about Duke and the kids at the bus stop before, but it’s just so cute that I have to share more. Duke and I have made a special new friend who is in middle school. She lives right across the street, and when Duke and I first started our walking schedule, she’d usually be on the corner waiting for us to come home. Then she started to come out earlier, so she could walk with us. Now, with her dad’s permission, she comes over even if we’re not able to take a walk.
I usually give her a breakfast bar because she has to wait until she gets to school to eat. We watch Buffy, the Vampire Slayer on Hulu for a bit while she plays with Duke and talks to me. (Buffy was her choice. Now she’s got me hooked.) She tells me a little bit about what’s going on in her life and at school. I don’t know why she doesn’t live with her mom, but there’s obviously a reason. And she needs someone she can talk to about stuff. I think that if it hadn’t been for Duke, she’d still be needing a “mom” figure in her life to talk to.
More love
I know that the time she spends with Duke and me is special to her. I think it makes her feel safe and loved. She usually gets here before my son leaves for college classes, so she tells him hi and bye. She talks about my daughter since she knows Molly leaves early to student teach. The cats have even begun to tolerate her presence…you know how cats can be!
When it’s about time for the bus to come, and more kids have gathered outside, we head outside with Duke. Duke seems to think everyone should love him, so, naturally, he wants to love on the five middle schoolers who catch the bus on our corner. He’s not crazy about the weekends because he doesn’t quite get why the kids aren’t out there on Saturdays and Sundays.
Duke definitely gives these kids more love right before school. I know they look forward to seeing him before they get on the bus.
Milk-Bone and #DogsAreMore
I am really loving the Dogs Are More campaign from Milk-Bone. It’s making me slow down and look at what is important in life. Dogs are more in so many ways. They snuggle more, smile more, play more, live more and bring more love into all our hearts. Milk-Bone wants you to celebrate how dogs are more and use their Gifmaker here to create a customized gif that shows the world how your dog is more. Then you can share it on Twitter and Facebook! Your video needs to be 3-5 seconds, and it is super easy to create once you go to Milk-Bone’s site.
Here’s a screenshot of Duke’s GIF, and then you can click the link below to see it in motion.

How great that you and Duke can be a supportive figure for the girl. Love the gifmaker and made one for my dog! Milk-Bone is a favorite in our house (well, with the dog 😉 ).
