Planning a friends, family and dogs barbecue
How many of your friends and family have dogs? I’ll bet if you stop and think about it, that at least half of them do. If you’ve got the space to do it, plan a barbecue that includes the entire family, including the dogs. It’ll take a bit of coordination, but you’re up for a challenge, right?
- Tables and chairs: If you don’t have enough, ask your friends to bring theirs along. With the dogs around, people will probably want to eat at a table rather than having their food on their laps.
- Pet bowls and treats: Dogs need plenty of water and plenty of rewards for good behavior! Be sure to stock up on some BBQ Chicken and Sweet Potato Flavor Vita Bone Dog biscuits! You can print a coupon to help you save a little money on them too.
- Food: This is a no-brainer, right? You’ve gotta have food! Can you say potluck? Unless you have a ton of time and love to cook, you have to go potluck style. Assign foods according to last (or first) names. Like A-F bring a meat, G-L can bring a side dish, etc. until you’ve got everything covered from appetizers to drinks. By the way, I’ve got the potato salad covered in this roundup!
- Games: Plan games for the kids AND the dogs! Have plenty of balls, frisbees, ropes, etc. around. It goes without saying that adult supervision is required for both!
- Shade: If you don’t have trees for shade, ask people to bring some umbrellas, or you can set up a few chairs and throw a blanket over top (think blanket fort) for some DIY shade.

Be sure you have trained him not to jump on people.
Christy Maurer says
That is a huge challenge for me! My dog is part either yorkshire or cairn terrier and he loves to jump…like 5 feet in the air lol.

We host the family cookout every year. I have a kiddie pool for our fur family members. I buy doggy beer (yes, it’s a thing) for them. It’s non alcoholic. They love it! I also buy glow necklaces for them in different colors. It makes it much easier to see where they are after it gets dark.
Christy Maurer says
That is so funny! I love that tip.

I usually let my dog play with the kids so that it keeps both the dogs and kids busy.
Calvin says
Play a little before hand so they don’t get too hyper, tire them out . By the time guests arrive it would be easier to handle.

We have a Great Dane and often, people are more nervous of her than she is of them. She does need to meet people in small groups or one on one because she gets so excited and she’s huge.
Cheryl Chervitz says
I don’t usually take my dogs to gatherings, they aren’t good with crowds. But, make sure everyone knows about the dog being there and watch them carefully.
Christina Gould says
My tips are to bring a leash and bring lots of doggie snacks. Thanks for the giveaway!
Susan Christy says
I give them extra treats before they go into their kennels. My senior girls don’t like a lot of excitement and kids especially scare them.

Actually, the dog would stay inside to not be fed any food that might be harmful to her or have people try to give her bones that would be harmful. That’s the best thing that can be done for the dog at my sister’s house. She’s too friendly and would want all the food that anyone would offer her.

We’ve been hosting the BBQ’s at the local park. In the summer the pool is open and the dog park is open all year around. The dog park has a pool too. The dogs love it.

Have a buffet for the dogs like the people have

If attending an event at another location, my dogs do not go with me. If the event is at my home, the dogs are in the fenced back yard until any food event or really larger groups are finished. They do much better with smaller groups of people.
