Flinch and RACK-O: Classic Games to Play with Family

Family

Thanks for sharing!

Welcome to the Mother May I Giveaway Hop! I’ve got two classic games that you should be playing with your family: Flinch and RACK-O. Winning Moves Games is celebrating its 25th Anniversary, and they’re giving one of you these two games! (ended)

Hosted by MamaTheFox

RACK-O® and FLINCH®

RACK-O

Players randomly slot ten cards on their rack. The race then begins to draw and discard until one player positions ten cards in numerical sequence. Sound simple? It is but you will need skillful play, concentration and just a little luck to win.

When I was young, my family used to play games a lot. I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so we didn’t have the internet or smartphones. Very few of my friends had an Atari. I sure didn’t! Playing card games and board games was our entertainment! I remember how much fun we’d have as a family. RACK-O was definitely (and still is) one of my favorite games. I love the challenge of thinking ahead and trying to figure out what cards your opponents have.

My kids are young adults who live at home. During the pandemic, my son was furloughed for a couple of weeks, so I made him play this with his sister and me. We had a lot of fun! When they’d discard a really low or high card, I’d tell them that if my dad were playing, he’d have saved that card even if he didn’t need it just so no one else could have it! Haha! He used to hide money when we played a certain board game too….

You can purchase RACK-O from Winning Moves Games.

Flinch

The original and ultimate Stockpile card game! Created in 1905 this American classic is back to entertain a whole new generation of card game players. If you’re the first player to play all your cards in sequential order, you win!

Now Flinch is a game that I didn’t play at home because we didn’t have it. BUT, I got to play it at my grandma’s house! I have shared many stories about my grandma on my blog because I was so close to her. I was Grandma’s girl and often spent the night at my grandparents’ house.

Grandma kept Flinch under the towels in one of the linen cupboard drawers. (Isn’t it funny that we can remember things like this but can’t remember where our keys are?) Just about every time I stayed with her, I’d ask to play Flinch. If you know anything about Flinch, you know it can be a very long game. I’m not sure if the short version of the game was “invented” when we played or not, but no matter how long the game took, Grandma was patient and loving enough to play it with me.

The most important thing I remember is how much fun it was to play with Grandma. When I’ve got grandchildren and when they’re old enough to play Flinch, I hope I’ve got the patience to teach them to play and to play it as many times as they want to play.

You can purchase Flinch from Winning Moves Games.

If you’ve got children or grandchildren, take the time to play card games and board games with them. I’m sure the memories you make playing games will be with them long after they’ve grown.

I loved playing a a dice game called Kismet which was like Yahtzee except the dice dots were colored black on 2 sides, green on 2 sides, and red on 2 sides. It was fun because it put a different spin on the types of scores you could get.

A few months before the social distancing restrictions my mom, son, his girlfriend and I started a weekly game night and our go to game was spades. We discovered that my mother is a real card shark! I know all of us can’t wait to start this fun tradition up again.

One game we played as kids was Can’t Stop. You had three markers to use each turn and would roll the dice to move up any of the columns 1-12. Once you put your three markers on for your turn, you could still keep rolling but if you didn’t roll the number your marker was on you would lose your turn and not be able to move. It was a lot better than my confusing explanation!

We like funny games that make us laugh. A lot of the games we play on special occasions or holidays, I make up or alter to fit that theme but make sure they are funny. Some other funny games we love to play that make us laugh are IMAGINIFF, CRAPPY BIRTHDAY, APPLES to APPLES, WHO’S THE DUDE & for a card game, we find the game SPOONS to be a lot of fun.
