One glass of cheap California chardonnay cost Emory Gosser Martinez her husband, her job, and her best friend. Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of her troubles.
Distraught after discovering the betrayal by her husband and best friend, Tori, cupcake caterer Emory Martinez allows her temper to flare. Several people witness her very public altercation with her ex-friend. To make matters worse, Tori exacts her revenge by posting a fake photo of Emory in a compromising situation, which goes viral on social media. When Tori is found murdered, all signs point to Emory being the prime suspect.
With the police investigation focused on gathering evidence to convict her, Emory must prove her innocence while whipping up batches of cupcakes and buttercream. Delving into the past of her murdered ex-friend, she finds other people had reasons to want Tori dead, including Emory’s own husband. Can she find the killer, or will the clues sprinkled around the investigation point the police back to her?

Thanks so much for hosting me today, Christy! I’m delighted to be celebrating my new cozy mystery release Sprinkles of Suspicion, which has been a few years in the making. When I released my suspense novel, A Game of Deceit, in 2017, it had taken me about seventeen years from beginning the novel to publishing. I’m pretty happy that Sprinkles of Suspicion only took three years to come out! I’d like to say I’m becoming a faster writer but I’m not. Maybe a bit more focused and smarter about writing? I hope so!
Part of the delay in writing my cozy mystery is because I became sidetracked with creating the recipes, especially the cocktail-themed cupcake recipes. With my protagonist’s sister being a caterer, and my protagonist, Emory, helping and making the desserts for her sister’s contracts, I knew I wanted to include appetizers, main dishes, and desserts in my book. Somehow those desserts evolved into becoming cocktail cupcakes and instead of leaving the kitchen after I’d developed two recipes, I ended up with over twenty recipes! And it certainly took me more than one and even two attempts to get each recipe just right.
You might ask what I did with all of those cupcakes since I certainly couldn’t consume them all and I hated to waste good ingredients. Well, I’d package the cupcakes up into my pink cupcake carrier and my husband would take them to the golf course on his golf days and pass them out. I laugh every time I visualize a group of grown men clustered around a pink carrier! Initially he couldn’t remember what the critique comments were so he had me print out survey forms. None of his friends could have a cupcake unless they agreed to fill out the form. I got some great feedback which sent me back to the kitchen to tweak the recipe until it received high marks.
I figure I have at least enough cocktail cupcake recipes developed for ten more books. I’d better leave the butter, sugar, and sprinkles alone for a while and get busy on my laptop dreaming up more trouble for Emory!
Thanks, Kim! I can see how cocktail cupcakes can be very distracting! I’m definitely going to have to try your recipes!
