How To Train Your Dog Using Technology

With the invention of high tech gadgets, it has become much easier to train your dog in recent years. It takes some consistency on your part, but the results are typically very positive. Invisible fences and bark collars are excellent devices to help you teach your dog good habits.

Invisible Fences

Fencing keeps your dog in the yard, preventing him from roaming the neighborhood and reducing his chance of being hit by a car. Building a physical fence in your yard is certainly an option to consider, but invisible fences offer a number of advantages with which traditional fences can’t compete.

  • Lower costs and installation time – Electric fences are frequently less expensive than traditional fences. If your neighborhood has specific codes that dictate the types of construction materials that are allowed, a physical fence can get quite costly. An invisible fence is also much easier to install. There are no fence posts to cement into the ground, and no nails to pound into boards. You just need to create a narrow trench using a straight shovel, making sure to go around the perimeter of your house and laying the wire inside.
  • Aesthetics – Since invisible fences are underground, they won’t interfere with the beauty of your yard. Conventional fences can make you feel confined, impeding the feeling of being in a wide, open space. With an invisible fence, you don’t have to worry about whether or not you closed the gate. You also don’t have to spend extra time pulling weeds around the fence, which can be time-consuming.
  • Adaptability – Traditional fences work quite well when your yard is relatively flat, but invisible fencing can work on a variety of terrains, including wooded locations and hilly areas. With an electric fence, you also have the flexibility to create any pattern or space that is sufficient for allowing your dog to get some needed exercise. Plus, if your dog is a digger or climber, she will be safer with an electronic fence.

Bark Collars

If you have a dog who barks a lot, there are a number of ways you can train him to quit his habit. Anti-bark collars have been proven to be very effective in training dogs to stop barking.

Vibration collars are a type of bark collar that emits a vibration on the neck of your dog. You can adjust the intensity of the vibration, depending on the size and temperament of your dog.

By contrast, shock collars are a bit more invasive. They give a mild jolt of electricity when your dog barks, and you can adjust the intensity of the shock. These collars are equipped with either a remote control that allows you to manually provide the jolt, or you can purchase a collar that provides a shock whenever the dog barks.

Ultrasonic training collars are also available. They are controlled by a remote that allows you to press a button, releasing a high-frequency sound. It should be noted that only dogs can hear the tone.

If your dog has difficulty hearing or seeing, a spray collar is a good option. When your dog barks, the collar emits a spray of citronella that attacks her sense of smell. You also have the option of purchasing a collar with a remote control.

Combination bark collars can also be purchased. As the name indicates, the collar gives you the option of combining two or three of the methods mentioned above. A collar that gives you the option of using ultrasonic sounds, vibrations and shocks allows you to begin using the least intrusive training tool and proceed to a more invasive method if that doesn’t work well.

Teach your dog the positive habits you want him to learn by utilizing the vast amount of technology available.
