Mystery/Suspense
Publisher: Wild Rose Press (February 15, 2021)
Paperback: 300 pages
A heart attack sends detective Rory Naysmith reeling. Too young to retire, he accepts a position in small-town Winterset, Nebraska. Handed an unsolved truck hijacking case, with the assistance of a rookie, Rory sets out to prove he is still able to go toe-to-toe with younger men.
When the body of a Vietnam veteran turns up, he dons his fedora and spit-shines his shoes. But before he can solve the murder, an older woman disappears, followed closely by a second hijacking. He doggedly works the cases, following a thread that ties the two crimes together. But can Rory find the mental and physical strength to up his game and bring the criminals to justice before disaster strikes and he loses his job?
Author Interview
Hi, Terry! Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself!
Texas has been my home for more than four decades. Before moving to Houston, I lived all over the Midwest and admit I’m still more cornhusker than cowgirl. I spent a thirty-year career in Information Technology, writing computer code and installing cash registers. Now I write prose and consider that my calling.
How long have you been writing?
For many years I wrote for myself and would have laughed at the idea I could author anything worthy of publication. In 2015, I took a vacation that included a writer’s conference. The conference venue was the draw, not the workshops or presentations. Afterward, I decided to submit a short story to an online magazine—my first submission ever. Fifteen minutes after hitting send, I received a publication contract. I guess you could say I have been writing seriously since then.
You write short stories, and you’ve written a memoir and mystery novel. What’s your favorite to write?
I love them all. Writing short stories offers a quick return on time invested and the satisfaction of accomplishment. A memoir is cathartic. Writing a novel provides a place to move-in and set up shop.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
Agatha Christie, Craig Johnson, John Sandford, and Dick Francis are all favorites.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I belong to several writing organizations, including SinC and Pennwriters. I’ve found their mentoring and resources well worth the cost of membership. I participate in two critique groups with members who write in genres different from mine. Their feedback and encouragement keep me honest, focused, and motivated. I am thrilled not to do this job alone.
What does your day look like when you are working on a book?
I try to write every day. My favorite time is early before the day’s distractions have a chance to intrude. If I start at four or five, I can put in a full day before lunch and then have the rest of the day to do anything that catches my fancy. I also read daily—it’s my unwinding time.
Do you have a favorite place to write? And do you listen to music while you write, or do you need it to be quiet?
I prefer silence when I’m working. And my favorite place to do that is a spare bedroom converted into a writing den. The room is complete with a substantial desk and plenty of room for family photos, plaques, and reference books. A picture window spans the wall behind my computer monitor. When I’m stuck on a scene or searching for the perfect word, I can look out at the sky and daydream.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was your favorite book you read as a child?
I don’t remember the first, but The Hardy Boys were favorites. My family was large—three girls, six boys. I suspect we were always underfoot, and during summer break, we were encouraged to read. It was probably the only way my parents got any peace. I still remember what the others read. We all grew up to be readers.
What is your favorite genre to read, and what are you reading now?
Mystery. A good mystery offers an escape from everyday life, plus extends the challenge to solve a puzzle. I enjoy reading everything from cozies to thrillers. Currently, I’m working my way through a cozy series by Ellen Byron.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I do all three and enjoy each for different reasons. But my personal preference is a physical book. I like to know how far I’ve read compared to how much of the book remains—gauging where I am in the story and how many surprises are still to come. It is the same reason I like an analog clock—it’s visual.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
That’s a hard one. I’ve lived in ten US states, visited the other forty, and traveled beyond the borders. I’d have to agree with Dorothy, “there’s no place like home.”
What are you working on now?
I’m polishing a second Detective Rory Naysmith mystery and hope to have it completed this spring. A collection of short stories has always been on the horizon, and who knows, I may pen a cozy as well.
Thank you, again, for taking the time to let us get to know more about you!
