Guest post from the author
Good day! I hope everyone has been enjoying the tour. I’m so pleased to be here and to have Rest, Relax, Run for Your Life to be in the hands of so many wonderful readers.
As you know by now, my name is Katherine Brown and I’m the author of the Ooey Gooey Bakery cozy mystery series.
What you might not know is that I originally intended to include recipes in the books of this series. Something in the Joanne Fluke Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder style as I loved the books and recipes from her series (the Butterscotchies, seriously the best recipe ever).
However, I don’t always remember to write down exact ingredients when I make up my own recipes and I began to second-guess my decision as I would hate to put recipes out there that weren’t of the highest quality.
So, did I make up all of the snack names in the books? Yes! My imagination can go absolutely crazy over food, particularly chocolate-laden desserts. I did even test bake several of my ideas and was pleased with most of the results, but overall, I decided that I needed to concentrate on actually writing the stories instead of spending so much time trying out all of the wild ideas the characters were baking up at the Ooey Gooey Goodness Bakery.
One thing that I did do, however, was start checking Google or Pinterest for each of my ideas. It was delightful to discover that many of my thoughts were already recipes that were searchable! For example, a particularly sticky breakfast of donut holes, walnuts, and honey sounded divine and sure enough, I found a recipe on Pinterest. (I actually liked it better with straight honey instead of making a honey syrup / sauce like the recipe called for.)
Another example, this one from book 2, Pastries, Pies, & Poison, of dessert I was certain I was making up completely and would never find a recipe for because it actually sounded so terrible, was watermelon pie.
Yes. Watermelon. Pie.
Come on, doesn’t that sound fictional???
Yet, the internet delivered a recipe right to my screen where people have actually made this dessert!
Have you had it before? Had you ever heard of such a thing? Am I crazy for thinking it sounded fake?
Anyway, I have had many comments and reviews about people who loved (or hated) all of the descriptions of snacks and desserts in these books. So, if you’re reading it and something sounds good, don’t be too disappointed at the lack of recipe because with just a little searching you should be able to find one.
I considered putting the recipes I found in the book but didn’t want there to be any confusion that I was claiming them as my own.
Writing so many tantalizing dessert descriptions certainly had me snacking during the whole process. My writing snacks included Ghiradelli dark chocolate squares, peanut butter-chocolate chip-oat-flax-protein-walnut mixture (was supposed to be rolled into protein bites, but I just ate it out of the bowl with a spoon), copious amounts of green tea and black tea, meatballs, and peanut butter sandwiches. Yes. That is basically all I subsisted on during the daytime lol. I did however cook full meals in the evenings and eat decent then.
As I write this post, I’m chomping handfuls of M&Ms…so I would say snacks and food play a large role in my writing.
I’d love to hear some of your favorite snacks or if there were any treats in the book that you especially would like to try! You can contact me on my website http://katherinebrownbooks.com/.
Have a fantastic day!
