An amateur sleuth named Bonnie and her kitty companion Clyde, with names like those, what could possibly go wrong?
Life hasn’t sparkled too brightly for Bonnie Balfour over the past few years, but a heart-breaking divorce has brought her back to her small rural hometown of Bliss, Georgia, and things are starting to shape up.
The proud new owner of Bless Her Heart—a second chance dress shop and boutique on the town square—Bonnie thinks thirty-eight might not be too late for a fresh start in life after all.
Until a grouchy old widow turns up dead in a pile of donations meant for Bonnie’s shop, and the town’s new detective pins her to the top of his suspect list!
To save her shop, dream and reputation, Bonnie must coordinate clues and stitch together the truth about her innocence, but the unreasonably handsome detective and prying eyes of the local gossip mill are fast fraying her nerves.
When a series of anonymous attacks begin to hem her in, Bonnie fears the real killer is fixing to make her his next victim. Can this amateur sleuth measure up?
Burden of Poof Book Review
If you read cozy mystery books, and you’re not reading books by Julie Anne Lindsey, you’re missing out! Here’s your chance to get started with her brand new Bonnie & Clyde Mysteries. Burden of Poof introduces us to Bonnie Balfour and her rescue kitty, Clyde. (You can get a free prequel to this series below too!!) In this first book, we get to visit the adorable town of Bliss, GA, check out some of the shops, swoon for the handsome detective from CLEVELAND, and figure out who murdered an old woman.
First of all, I adore this new setting that Lindsey has created. Through her writing, you’ll feel like you’re right in the center of Bliss. The shops that line main street are ones I’d love to visit and browse. Bonnie’s store, Bless Her Heart, is one I’d go into just to soak in the atmosphere, and visit Clyde, of course. There’s a book store where I’d spend lots and lots of time because it’s kind of mysterious….I don’t want to give anything away; you need to visit too. And there’s a book club….they’re reading a book about a gal who runs an iced tea shop….
Then there are the wonderfully written characters who live in Bliss. Some of the townsfolk are rather curious…lovable but peculiar. And there’s the hunky “on loan” detective from Cleveland (which explains away all of his idiosyncrasies to the residents of Bliss) who tries his best to keep Bonnie safe in spite of her curious nature. I can’t wait to get to know more of the characters in this delightful town.
Burden of Poof will keep you up all night reading trying to solve the crime. I can’t wait for more of Bonnie and Clyde and the cozy town of Bliss. I highly recommend Burden of Poof to all cozy mystery lovers!
Guest post – The Mystery Diet. Results May Vary
I was raised in the 1980s, by a mystery-loving mom and whole lot of crime-themed programming. My mom quit her job to stay home with me after I was born, and she picked up a serious mystery addiction in the process. Television was producing a record number of shows. Subscription channels like The Movie Channel were appearing, and my mom was loving every minute of it all. (40 years later, I would bet my best shoes that her kindle and Netflix recently read/viewed are 98% mystery and crime fiction titles). Basically, I was surrounded by the genre during my formative years. Television shows and audio books played while Mom cooked, while she cleaned and later, when books came out on CD, we listened to them when she drove.
Amateur sleuths played the soundtrack to my life, ever-present in the background of my memories. While I did homework. When I practiced new cheers. And while I talked on the phone, with its twenty-foot, spiral chord stretched to the max and tucked beneath the nearest door for privacy. From Murder She Wrote to Remington Steele, Simon and Simon to Moonlighting, Mom and I were never without a good sleuth companion.
I learned slowly, subliminally, to appreciate the quality intrigue of a well-spun whodunnit, and I’m confident Mom’s passion is where my love of the genre began. Even if it took me about 30 years to realize.
I’ve often wondered if my mom ever dreamed her little girl would grow up to write the books she loved to read. Probably not. I certainly never guessed I’d become a novelist. I have a degree in psychology. A career in mystery writing never crossed my mind. Though, I’ve always spent a large amount of time wondering why? Why do people do the things they do? Why do two people, doing the same thing at the same time, sometimes have two different experiences? Perceptions and motivations are things I think about for hours. So, instead of wondering whodunnit, I’ve always been more interested in why?
So, how about me? Why did this become my career? Maybe there’s something to the old adage. Maybe what goes in will eventually come out. At around age 35, the 18 years of continuous mystery exposure finally began to come out. Fast forward ten years, and here I am with 40 traditionally published novels under my belt, and the first in my newest series on shelves this week.
I am a product of my mother’s mystery-loving environment, and I’m doing my best to continue in her crime-fiction-loving footsteps. The only difference these days, is that I get to write the mysteries and solve them. And I dedicate the work to my mama as often as possible.
How about you? Did you grow up on mysteries like me? What were your favorite books and shows? Or maybe it was another genre that effected your future?
I think I will always have a crush on Magnum P.I. There’s just something about that mustache. (Christy: I agree. I still love him on Blue Bloods!)
Thank you, again, for inviting me over today! And for sharing your blog with me. I hope you’ll get a chance to meet Bonnie & Clyde soon, and that you’ll join them on their first sleuthing adventure in BURDEN OF POOF!
