Creating a seamless transition between your interior and exterior is a marvelous way to give off the illusion that you have a huge space. You can have the smallest of spaces and the illusion will still be there. It’s perfect for allowing more nature to be inside, it creates more natural light and airflow. But it also allows you and everyone else in your household to truly maximize your interior and exterior. Having this connection with nature is important and it helps us feel better and be more productive. Being able to achieve this look can be fairly simple if done correctly.
Large windows
Having large windows in your space is hands down the best way to achieve that transition to being outside. Large windows allow for a lot of natural light to seep through, it’s going to accomplish the appearance of greenery, as you’ll be able to see your backyard thanks to the expansive windows. But it also removes those walls giving the home a pleasant appearance. Having the walls removed allows for the illusion of having a large interior since more natural light is present.
This is a more expensive option, but it’s definitely worth it in the end. You don’t even need to have a wall filled with large windows, even if the walls in your current home are replaced with bigger ones, it will still help in creating the illusion of having a larger room.
Light curtains
A more cost-effective way to achieve a seamless transition would be with curtains. Purchasing lightweight curtains that are made of sheer or chiffon is going to help with the airiness and the flow that you’re wanting to achieve. The color white or even beige is ideal as these will help in bringing in the sunlight. This helps out in giving off the appearance of having a bigger space. It’s always better to have floor-length curtains as this helps with the illusion of the ceiling being tall.
Glass doors
You’ll see for many modern homes that the back of the house will have a large doorway and windows next to it. These are often sliding doors or even concertina doors. These sorts of doors are very versatile as they help out in removing that division of your house and outside. Whenever these doors open, it combines the two elements.
However, these doors are quite long and wide, so they bring in a lot of natural lighting inside the home as well. It makes an excellent combination to have this door and large windows. This will then leave the space looking much larger, displaying the exterior from inside. It’ll encourage you to go outside to enjoy what nature has to offer.
Ceiling extension
There can be two ways to go about this, but both would be considered extremely costly. You could look into having your ceilings extended so you’ll have taller rooms within your space. This would be an extremely costly and lengthy process, that probably wouldn’t be worth it in the end, especially if you have two levels in your home.
Alternatively, you can extend your roof outward. If you have a deck or patio outside, then the roof extension can cover that. This will make your outdoor living area have the appearance that it’s an interior space. This would be considered an overhead, and it truly helps in combining the two spaces. Having this extension will create the flow of going outside rather than abruptly stopping it.
This can be very beneficial as it helps to be a part of nature even during the rain or other bad weather. These overhead areas can have a variety of purposes such as a fireplace, outdoor kitchen, or a nice sitting area. Even if you need tips for buying patio furniture, some factors such as durability against the weather can be taken as the extended roof will protect it. Overall, this is going to help you in creating a little cozy retreat from the inside of your house, while still being in the comfort of your own home. Some roofs can extend to help create gazebos, pergolas, and pavilions.
Having cohesive colors
Achieving a cohesive color palette between the indoor and outdoor space is a very easy way to make the transition very seamless. Whenever you’re using the same color scheme, it will drastically help with creating a sense of luxury with the space. This cohesive color palette can be used for flooring, the walls, furniture, and even decorative accents as well. This is going to help with the illusion that it’s one large space, thus bringing in more comfort as well.
Neutral colors are often the best way to go at this, think of white, light browns, and beige. It also helps a lot if the flooring is the same. If your space is an open plan, meaning no walls or borders between the Living Room, kitchen, and backdoor, having the same flooring will help. This will not only make the space look much bigger, but it will also help in the transition, especially if the outdoor space, such as a deck, has the same flooring. Wooden floors are ideal for achieving this look.
The arrangement of the furniture
This will mostly help if you have an open flooring plan. But a very cost-effective way to achieve a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors would be by arranging the furniture. You’ll want to make sure that the furniture isn’t acting as a wall or barrier for the spaces. You can arrange your furniture in such a way that it helps blur the lines and 2 spaces become one. Arranging furniture does have the power to obstruct any divisions. Just do some experimenting with your space to find out what the best method is to achieve this look.
Floor level
This may go unnoticed, but did you know that the change in floor levels can affect the transition between the indoors and outdoors? This may look like a small division, but it can have a big effect, especially if the interior of your home lacks any of these divides. One of the most common dividers would be steps and stairs. These are both physical and mental breaks between the two spaces which immediately destroys the illusion that the two spaces are fused. If possible, it’s best to avoid having different floor levels and try to go for a union for the floor level.
Plants
Bringing the outdoors inside with some plants is one of the best ways to achieve this seamless transition. This could technically be cost-effective as well depending on the type of plants you have and plants you plan to purchase. This brings some luxury into your interior space while still keeping the serenity it has. Greenery will often match most color schemes too. One idea would be to have the same type of plants between the two spaces.
For example, if you have a lot of tropical plants outside such as palms and lilies, try bringing those in as well to achieve the seamless transition. The plants outside could be potted plants or even something that’s been planted. Be sure to look at the pots that you plan to use, if they’re complimentary colors, this is also going to help with having the appearance look more put-together.
Lighting
As stated earlier, glass doors and large windows are excellent ways to bring in more natural lighting. Light has the power to blend two spaces. It has the power to do this while also helping in creating subtle distinctions between the two. Proper lighting will help make it look cozy and well blended. This is mostly achieved with natural lighting but you can do it with artificial lighting as well, especially at night.
