Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove (A Tenth Life Cozy Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Publisher: Independently published (August 3, 2021)
Paperback: 249 pages
Septuagenarian Camelia Collins and her cat Blaze move to the Oregon Coast to fulfill a lifelong dream, but that dream becomes a nightmare when Camelia learns she has purchased a murder house. The former resident, reclusive businessman Jonathan Chamber, was brutally killed on the stoop, and the killer is still at large.
What’s more, Camelia discovers an ancient gravestone at the back of her garden belonging to a cat named Soji. Dead long ago, this seventh black kitten of a seventh black kitten now returns incorporeal form. Will Soji’s haunting help Camelia solve the murder mystery or send her screaming back to Portland?
My review of Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove
Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove is the first book in a brand new series from Mollie Hunt, Tenth Life Cozy Mystery Series. You have heard that cats have nine lives. Well, that means a ghost cat, in this case Soji, is on her tenth life. When Camelia Collins moves from Portland to her dream location on the Oregon Coast, she has no clue that she’s bought the “murder house.” Camelia isn’t extremely bothered by that fact, but then her movers give her a USB stick they find and chaos breaks loose in the “quiet” town and Camelia’s dream of peace and quiet is shattered…for a little while at least.
I really loved this delightful, fast-paced cozy mystery book. The setting, aside from being a murder place!, sounds like it’s a place I would love to live. Sure, Oregon is pretty chilly and probably pretty cloudy a lot, but I could adjust. I live in Ohio, so I’m used to cold, cloudy weather. The characters who inhabit the town are an eclectic mix. You won’t know who you can trust among them, but that makes the mystery even more exciting.
If you love your cozy mystery books with cats, quirky characters, a wonderful setting, and lots of clues to muddle through on the way to solving the mystery, you’ll want to read Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove!
Guest Post: QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE
Recently I was a member of a panel of notable cat writers, a cooperative effort between the Cat Writers’ Association and the Broward Library. It was a fun hour with the host asking questions about our writing, our stories, and our cats. For the final 15 minutes, she took queries from the audience. Many were the classic “What is your writing process?” and “How many hours a day do you write?” but one question stood out. Fact is, it stumped all five of us: “If your book were a movie, who would play your heroes?”
This question required some thought, and though I wasn’t quick enough to give an answer during the panel, I’ve come up with a lineup for Ghost Cat of Ocean Cove that I think you’ll enjoy.
Camelia Collins: Septuagenarian who recently relocated from Portland Oregon to her dreamhouse in Ocean Cove. Camelia assumes life will be a blend of pleasant people, beach walks, and nights by the fire, but things turn out differently when she learns of a three-year old murder committed on her doorstep and a ghost cat haunting her back yard, Camelia gets a few surprises, but like the trooper she is, she takes them in stride. Played by (who else?) Angela Lansbury
Vera: Camelia’s widowed neighbor; uses a walker; wears a housedress; likes mushroom-shaped furniture. Played by Betty White
Ellery Evans: Elderly artist; thinks the world of Camelia; may be disappointed. Played by Morgan Freeman
Sheriff James Jamie Gilroy: Optimistic small-town law; runs a program to unite prisoners and pit bulls; leads the Independence Day Parade. This is his first murder case. Played by Tom Hiddleston
Soji the Ghost Cat: Born in the early nineteen-hundreds; died thirty years later; has been haunting Love Cottage ever since. Played by herself.
About Mollie Hunt
Native Oregonian Mollie Hunt has always had an affinity for cats, so it was a short step for her to become a cat writer. Mollie Hunt writes the award-winning Crazy Cat Lady cozy mystery series featuring Lynley Cannon, a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip, and the Cat Seasons sci-fantasy tetralogy where cats save the world. She also pens a bit of cat poetry.
Mollie is a member of the Oregon Writers’ Colony, Sisters in Crime, the Cat Writers’ Association, and Northwest Independent Writers Association (NIWA). She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and a varying number of cats. Like Lynley, she is a grateful shelter volunteer.
