5 Tips for Creating an Emergency Supply Kit

Thanks for sharing!

It’s far better to be safe than sorry which is why it’s best to always stay prepared. Emergencies can happen at any potential time. This can be due to the weather, such as driving in the snow, it can be caused by flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, but even due to something such as an earthquake or some type of accident. These events are unexpected which means it’s best to be prepared for the unexpected.

This is where emergency kits come in. These emergency kits can be kept at home and even in your car in case something happens. Sometimes the weather can make it hard to escape which is why it’s crucial to have one of these. These are some tips for learning about how to pack an emergency kit.

Get it done early

In these special kits, it’s best to just generally prepare for any sort of natural disaster. This can include fires, floods, snow, but can include other natural disasters as well. Think back to the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic or even at the beginning of any sort of weather advisory.

There are hordes of people stocking up on toilet paper, batteries, water, and even granola bars. It’s not fun having to be in that sort of crowd. Getting this emergency kit done far early is going to make this scenario far less stressful as you’re already prepared.

Pack based on your location

It’s best to pack your emergency supply kit based on the location that you’re at. If you have to commonly deal with winter weather at home, then you’re most likely not going to have to deal with hurricanes. People who live in Colorado may have a different list of priorities needed for their supply kit compared to those who live in Florida.

Emergency Kit Supply List

While it may be a lot of stuff, it’s far better off if you have a couple of crates or if you have some duffel bags that can be used. You just need whatever will make the emergency pack easier to take around. Some items you’ll need include

  • Nonperishable food
  • Can opener
  • Water
  • Power bank
  • Batteries
  • Copies of insurance
  • Toilet paper
  • Life Straw
  • First aid kit
  • SOS sign

Know where safety is

Apart from having an emergency kit for yourself and your family would be the fact that you’ll need to be kept in a shelter. It depends on each type of situation. If you’re in a snowstorm, you may be better off at home. If you’re dealing with fires then it’s best to evacuate far away, usually the municipality will have somewhere recommended. This should also include knowing where the urgent care center is and where the hospital is located as well.

Where to place your emergency kit

Ideally, it’s best to have two different types of emergency kits. You’ll want a portable version that can remain in your car (in the case you’re stranded due to weather, car trouble, or an accident) as well as have one somewhere in your house. It’s best to keep the portable one in a backpack in the trunk of your car while the larger one is kept in a safe spot in your houses such as a closet, basement, or attic.
