Festive Cranberry Date-Nut Doodles

Related Story: “Cookies, Lies & Homicide” by Angela Henry

Description: When lonely widow Mercy Davenport finds a lost dog, she has no idea searching for its owner will land her in the middle of a murder mystery, putting her in the crosshairs of a killer and on the radar of a grumpy local police detective.

This recipe is adapted from these Cranberry Nut Cookies: Machelle, Wall, Rosamond, California via Taste of Home Website.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ⅔ cup butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon orange extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 ½ cups halved fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
DIRECTIONS
  1. Get a large bowl and cream the butter and sugars together. Once it’s light and fluffy, and not a minute before, beat in the egg, milk, lemon juice, and orange extract.
  2. Combine the dry ingredients then gradually, and I mean gradually, add to the creamed mixture, and mix well. Add in the cranberries, dates, and chopped walnuts and make sure you combine it well.
  3. Spoon heaping tablespoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet but not too close together because they’ll spread. Bake at 350° for about 16 minutes or until golden brown. Remove cookies and put on a cooling rack.

Best eaten with milk, coffee, hot chocolate, eggnog, or whatever floats your boat.
