Claire Barclays tourists are exploring the cobbled streets of York. Her American ladies from Tucson, the couple from Bristol, and the couple from London appear fascinated by Claire’s explanations of the unique architecture.

All except Philip, a younger, single man who disappears—again. Claire spots him entering the chocolate factory and races down the stairs, suspecting Phillip has headed for the kitchens and trips over the body of a security guard.

She doesn’t see any connection between the body and tourists until Mark, her loving partner, and a detective inspector with the Major Crimes Investigation Team tells her Philip is an undercover Scotland Yard detective and on a job.

Claire removes the group from the city of York quickly and drives them north to the Yorkshire Moors, a vast land of almost bleak wilderness and the setting of many mystery novels. She stops for a picnic at the famous Ralph’s Cross where moorland, green with springtime heather, stretches for miles.

Her bucolic plans are interrupted when her American ladies report the sudden death of Philip in the surrounding bog. Mark tells her Philip was on the trail of a drug distribution team. But will Claire be able to keep these ladies who are intelligent, determined, and expert mystery readers out of a messy situation with a murderer? Claire has high hopes that she will be able to do so without endangering them all.

Perils in Yorkshire Book Review

Perils in Yorkshire is an entertaining cozy mystery. It’s the third book in the British Mystery Book Tours series. In the series, Claire Berkeley runs a mystery book tour company. She takes small groups to different locations where mystery books have been set. She also takes them to interesting and historic places around the areas they are visiting. This time the tour is in the Yorkshire area. And, the tourists get more mystery than they bargained for.

This is the second book that I have read from this series. I read Crime in Cornwall last year, and it was such a delightful cozy mystery. Needless to say, I was very excited to read Perils in Yorkshire. It is also a very charming cozy. Though I enjoyed it very much, it took me a bit longer to get through this one. The author gives very detailed descriptions of the areas she takes the tourists to visit. This is wonderful for those of us who long to visit England but cannot. I’ve always wanted to go on a small group tour like Claire leads in the book. Maybe someday.

The characters in Perils in Yorkshire are quite an eclectic group. Three older ladies from Tucson, two couples and a single male traveler make up the group. The interactions among the group are entertaining, especially those among the three Tuscon women.

When the murder occurs, you will find that many of the characters could be the killer. With the hints that the author scatters throughout the book, you should be able to figure out what the motive for the murder is before you figure out who the killer is.

You can easily read Perils in Yorkshire without having read the prior books. The author gives you enough information to figure out the backgrounds of the main characters as well as their personalities.

If you enjoy reading cozy mystery books that are very descriptive, have interesting and eclectic characters, and transport you to the book’s location, you’ll really enjoy Perils in Yorkshire.

Character Guest Post

My name is Evelyn Roberts. I live usually in Tucson, Arizona, but I’m here in England, travelling with my friends Geraldine and Norma on the British Mystery Book Tour. It’s run by Claire Barkley, an energetic entrepreneur English woman. She drives a big van and eight of us from Britain and America are members of this tour. I like the touches of luxury Claire provides: the elegant meals and the way in which every little detail is looked after.

After years of working hard in the realty world of Arizona, I was ready for some pampering. Geraldine had taught high school and was ready for her own version of luxurious living. Norma always lived in the moment even before retirement. She’d been a kindergarten teacher and never seem to know where we were and what we were doing, but enjoyed it anyway.

We started our tour in York at the Chocolate Factory. There wasn’t any mystery book attached to this factory, but chocolate is entrancing in itself and seems to make its way into any mystery book I’ve ever read. We were just after chocolate. We weren’t counting on the security guard getting murdered or Claire involving us in the solving of the murder.

To be fair, she tried to keep us out of it. But we are avid mystery novel fans and read tons of mysteries so we know a thing or two about solving them—and we aren’t fools. We could observe, report what we see, make assumptions and come up with some pretty good suspects. We wouldn’t have been quite confident if we’d known what was in store for us.

The three women from Tucson gave me endless entertainment. I hope you enjoy them as well.
