Rogue Unbroken Book Excerpt
“Legends are real,” Alec continued on the screen.
The video changed to footage just outside of the lab. It was a take of the fight just before Alec and I had made it inside to rescue Rachel. But the only person who was visible in the video, identifiable at least, was me.
My dark hair fell over my shoulders as I drained energy from a Legend until his knees hit the ground. My head snapped up and my icy eyes locked on the next target. I stepped over the man’s unconscious body.
“What is this?” Kylan asked, moving closer to the screen. The video changed to another shot of me.
“They survive on human energy. Without control, they are dangerous to every person on this planet.” Alec’s calm voice seemed out of place for what he was saying.
On the screen, I stood over Raven with crazed eyes and a syringe in my hand. My hair looked like it hadn’t been brushed in weeks and my skin shone with old sweat. I shoved the needle in her neck, killing her within minutes as I watched her blood spill on my hands.
“Is that you?” Lisa asked from behind me. My eyes remained glued to the screen in front of me.
I couldn’t answer her. I didn’t want to. All I could do was watch my worst memories unfold in front of me.
“They will kill whoever they come in contact with. But they can be killed. They can die, just like humans can, even if they are harder to kill,” Alec explained.
More footage of me flashed on the screens. I was stuck behind the glowing bars in the cell. My hand shot through the bars to grab the man standing in front of me. The video never showed his face but I remembered exactly who it was.
Alec. He was keeping his face hidden from the viewers. He only wanted me shown in the announcement.
“I want to drain all of the energy from your body,” I said in the video. “I’m desperate.”
The energy glowed even brighter than the light of the bars, illuminating my face further. My hand remained clamped on his neck. My expression changed the longer I held on. As the energy entered my body, I looked less like an innocent captive and more like the villain.
“This particular Legend is named Kate Martin. She has been seen residing in Portland, Oregon.” Alec’s face appeared back in the video again.
“It is her,” Chase whispered behind me.
My eyes stayed focused on the screen. I couldn’t feel Kylan standing next to me or hear Lisa’s strained, nervous breaths.
All I could see was Alec, ripping my life apart.
“She’s a monster,” Alec accused. “If you see her, kill her on sight.”
