It’s interesting how the experiences we have within our respective countries and cultures can shape our outlook on life to a certain extent. Where we grow up and the memories that make up who we are — our experiences both good and bad are so incredibly varied from person to person.

There are so many different cultural experiences, so many different ways of living and experiencing the world — old cultures and new cultures. There is also a great deal of commonality among people around the world. One thing that I have been lucky enough to witness as a uniting force among people of different ages and backgrounds in the US is the deep and undying love that people have for their pets. This is one of the things that stands out with the people I have met at readings for my book Sounds Like Love, which features a plucky tabby cat.

It’s interesting when we focus on this most personal and individual of relationships how it opens our hearts to a special and unique place — a place of sharing and of humour, tenderness and often undying love and the hope that we will once again be united with our friends of a different species in another life.

We are having these cross-species relationships everyday around the world and it is something marvelous and special.

So many times I have walked into a store and somehow ended up talking about my cats with the shop owner who happens to have cats too — and of course, out come our phones as we share photos of our beloveds (my phone memory is at its limit, mainly because of photos of my ‘significant other’ pets).

If people’s pets knew just how many photos their owners took of them sleeping — they would surely find us humans rather strange! However, all of this photographing and documenting comes from a place of love. It’s a quiet love that we don’t always feel comfortable to share with others unless they too can understand — but it is nonetheless an incredibly important love and one that helps make the world go round every single day.

Thanks for this guest post, Laura! I have 3 inside cats, 2 outside cats (they were feral, got them fixed), and many other random cats who have homes come to eat here… If it’s just the cats with  homes out there at the time, we do tell them to go home LOL. ~ Christy

Yes, we do! With the cold and rain, the neighbor cat decided she wanted in today! I told her she has a home! You’re very welcome, and thanks for stopping today!

I love cats! I have 8 at the moment. I shelter elderly cats. I did find a kitten about 4 mos. ago. He’s keeping everyone young.
