Cutting costs

When my husband died 3 1/2 years ago, my kids were 16 and almost 19. Our family’s income dropped to almost zero. Thanks to grants and government programs like the EBT card, we’ve been able to make it. Saving time and money is important to me as I’m sure it is to you too. Single moms have a tough job. I never planned on being a single mom, so even though I tried to save money for our family, I didn’t have to think too far out of the box to cut costs. Now I’m always thinking of ways to save.  It hasn’t been easy, but we have found ways to cut costs. One of the things we cut was cable. Since my daughter is currently in college, she qualifies for Amazon Prime, but she’ll soon be graduating. When she graduates, we’ll still be able to afford it thanks to a newly released program from Amazon. Amazon Prime is available to qualifying government assistance users for $5.99 a month.

Another thing I do to cut costs is to pack food from home when we travel for my blog. When I’m invited to go to amusement parks or similar places in exchange for reviews, food is rarely included in my invitations. I’ve learned to pack food to take along rather than buy food where I am. I’ve also found that these places will give you a cup of water even if you don’t order food.

The perks of having an Amazon Prime membership

There are lots of perks to having an Amazon Prime membership. Some of my favorites are included below.

  • Prime Video: Cutting entertainment costs are one of those things that you’ve got to do when you don’t have a lot of money. We love watching television and movies together! By using this plan, I can save over $75 a month by watching on Prime Video rather than on cable.
  • Prime Music: We are music lovers in his house, and having access to more than two million songs and thousands of playlists and stations is a great perk.
  • Prime Photos: Memories are precious. I can’t tell you how thankful I am to have pictures and videos of my husband. Unlimited photo storage helps preserve your memories at a reasonable price.
  • Prime Reading: If you follow my blog much, you know what a huge reader I am! I love having access to free e-books and magazines.
  • Audible Channels for Prime: We listen to a lot of audible books when we are on longer road trips. They are entertaining, and getting them for free from Audible Channels for Prime rather than having to make a trip to the library saves me time.
  • Kindle First: More book perks! You get a free pre-release e-book each month with Amazon Prime.
  • Prime FREE Same-Day Delivery: In eligible zip codes, there are a million different products you can order. If you order by noon, you’ll get your order the same day.
  • FREE two-day shipping on more than 50 million eligible items is one of the main reasons I love Amazon Prime. Shipping costs can really prevent me from using Amazon as a way to save money. Sometimes the shipping outweighs the savings, but not when you’ve got Amazon Prime!

Who qualifies?

If you have an EBT card like I do, you may qualify for this discounted price. EBT cards are given to low income families for different reasons. I have one for food since my family doesn’t make over 200% of the poverty level right now.

You can’t use your EBT card to pay for membership, and you can qualify every 12 months up to 4 times. Amazon will add other ways to qualify in the future for customers participating in government assistance programs that do not utilize EBT. There is no annual commitment with Amazon Prime and you can cancel anytime. Learn more or sign up for a 30-day free trial at amazon.com/qualify.

What are your favorite Amazon Prime perks? Mine is definitely the fact that I can still watch my favorite television shows and movies at a fraction of cable’s cost. Be sure to share this discounted Amazon Prime membership with your friends and family! I know they’ll thank you!

I’ve been a Prime member for years and I love everything about it – especially the two-day shipment. I live in a small town and usually, I’ll just order whatever I need from Amazon instead of having to drive to Charlotte to grab it.

How good that the government are helping bring in new ways to help low-income families, enjoy things. Amazon Prime is so much more than just free delivery it’s the discounts, getting to talk to your friends about the shows and of course read some awesome books.

I think it is a great idea for Amazon to offer a reduced price for people on government assistance. Is this only in the US or is it Canada as well.

Right now it is for EBT holders, but they’ll be rolling out more ways to qualify soon. Does Canada have EBT cards? (Food stamps, WIC, SNAP)

Love the free books, video, music, free shipping and you can’t beat the price! I pay more than twice that for less than half as much.

I’d heard of Prime but didn’t realize that it offered so much. Thanks for putting it all together in one easy to understand post.
