Simple Ways To Train Your New Puppy

Animals· Dogs

Thanks for sharing!

When you get a new puppy, it is naturally an exciting time. But, what many people seem to forget is that it is just as exciting for your new best friend! They have a new family that they are going to get to know and love. Getting a new pet is always something to look forward to. You do need to ensure that you are training your new puppy though. this includes housebreaking as well as obedience training. Since training is essential when you get a new dog, I have a few things to help you. Look at these simple ways you can train your new puppy.

Simple Ways To Train Your New Puppy

Use positive reinforcement

One simple way to train your new puppy is to use positive reinforcement. What this means is that when your puppy does something correctly, you either give him praise or a treat for a job well done. In the same way that you do with your kids, make sure that your puppy knows that what he has done is correct by rewarding him with something that he likes. He will get the message that when he completes this command, he will get a reward. By doing this, you are not only helping your new puppy to learn faster, but you are also making training into a positive experience.

Positive reinforcement should be used for potty training as well as for basic commands. For the first few weeks, though, you might want to use puppy pads, and train your puppy to do their business there. A simple way to train your new puppy to go potty outside is by moving the puppy pads closer and closer to the door and eventually to the outside where your puppy will pick up that the correct place to relieve himself is in the yard. Make sure that you always have treats handy when you are potty training!

Make training sessions short and sweet

Another simple way to train your new puppy is by keeping these sessions short and sweet. You don’t want to overwhelm your new puppy by teaching her commands too quickly. For this reason, you should spend no more than around fifteen minutes each day teaching her a new command. If you want to teach her to sit, then use the positive reinforcement method and do it in short bursts. You might not believe this right now, but short training sessions help the command stay in your puppy’s memory. Otherwise, she will be overwhelmed and overstimulated. If you use short training sessions consistently, your puppy will learn new commands in no time.

Simple Ways To Train Your New Puppy

End training sessions with a command your puppy knows

The best way to end a training session is with something that he already knows. For example, if you are trying to teach your new puppy to lie down, and he already knows how to sit, when you are finished trying to teach him the new skill, get him to do the other one right before you end your session. This makes the training part of the day end on a high note for both you and your puppy which makes everyone happy.

I hope that you have found these simple ways to train your new puppy helpful, and you will use these suggestions to train your brand new best friend!

Wow, good tips. I don’t know if I’ll be getting a puppy, it would be good if I can, and I’d really need to know these things!
