This Book Is Gray
by Lindsay Ward
Dec 1, 2019
Two Lions
Ages 4-8
40 pages
Only Lindsay Ward could create a book about the color gray and make it cheerful. The story begins on the endpapers with a bright rainbow and color glossary.
In the story, Gray just wants to be included. But the other colors are always leaving him out. So he decides to create his own project: an all-gray book. Once upon a time, there lived a wolf, a kitten, and a hippo…
Gray just knows it’s going to be perfect. But as he adds page after page, the Primary and Secondary colors show up…and they aren’t quite so complimentary.
A book within a book, this colorful tale explores the ideas of fitting in, appreciating others, and looking at things from another perspective and also uses personality and wit to introduce basic color concepts.
Praise for This Book Is Gray
“This book is a fun introduction to color theory that may inspire children to use more gray in their artwork and remind them to include friends who are left out.” —Booklist
My review
Poor Gray! He’s feeling left out because he’s not in the rainbow, no one wants to color with him, and the other colors don’t get that he’s a color too! They don’t include him, so he sets out to make his own book of GRAY!
Well, even though he wants a gray book, somehow, the colors find their way into his book! They don’t understand that he thinks gray is perfect! THEY think that it’s going to be a scary book because it’s gray (and gloomy). Gray gets very exasperated with the primary and secondary colors as the interrupt his story. Even black and white want to be in the story!
Finally, they come up with a way that they can all be included! After all, no one wants to be left out. Not even a color.
This book is so cute! I absolutely love the illustrations, and the humor that’s thrown in to the book makes this a fun one for you to read to your kids multiple times. We all know kids learn best from real books, and this is a real book that will teach your kids to remember that no one likes being left out of the fun!

I still need to get gifts for the kids. It is mostly clothing and electronics that they want. I will likely get giftcards so they can pick their own and get what they like vs. what I like 😉

We don’t have many small kids in our family right now. They are at the age where they want money or tech! The adults just get together now.
shelly peterson says

Julie Waldron says
Yes, I still have some shopping to do. Other than stocking stuffers, we’re done with our 26 year old daughter. She’s so easy to buy for! We still have to finish up for our son-in-law and our 23 year old daughter. She likes books so that’s easy enough but I don’t want to just get her that. 🙂 I still have to finish up for my husband, no idea what else to get him. We have extended family to buy for as well, some will just get gift cards.

I am doing my shopping a little at a time. Unlike previous years, I’m buying more gifts rather than making them myself– for a number of reasons. The things I’m shopping for are pretty varied and random. 🙂

We stopped exchanging Christmas gifts years ago, preferring to celebrate Christmas as a time to enjoy each other’s company rather than exchanging gifts so I have no shopping to do. Every year I give my daughter and son-in-law a small sum of cash to purchase whatever they want and a Honey Baked Ham gift card because son-in-law loves Honey Baked Ham and daughter (a chip off the old block) is to cheap to buy it!
Christy Maurer says
That’s a great idea!

I have many presents to purchase still. I am looking at the Waowoo Adult Weighted Blanket Queen Size(15lbs 60″x80″) Heavy Blanket with Premium Glass Beads (Dark Grey). That would be great for the family.

I am not sure if I need to shop for anyone. I am kicking myself because I found some amazing deals but I did not buy enough and regretting that I did not buy more of the items when they were on sale (as in the Old Navy fuzzy socks for $1 each. Should have bought 10-15 pairs). Thank you
