Nature breeds new life with the sign of Spring in the air in Leavensport, Ohio, and Jolie and Ava find their new families’ lives turned upside down! With properties in Leavensport beginning to sell, Nina Sanchez opened a bakery after purchasing the lot next to M&M’s Italian restaurant.

She is new to town and swears to Ava and Jolie she has no connection to the Dominican Republic Sanchez mafia family. Yet, Ava is skeptical, and this sends Jolie and Ava off on yet another investigation looking at how organized crime connects to their little village and the politics that surround it.

Meanwhile, Nina Sanchez is not thrilled to feel obliged to cross-sell and become a full-fledged member of Leavensport, especially not with Jolie and Ava investigating her history. She has no choice when her son discovers a murdered homeless woman on the street on his way to deliver bread to the local shelter—it looks a lot like a mob hit and the reveal of who the homeless woman is will send all of Leavensport on alert making Jolie question the future of her town.

Welcome to Leavensport, Ohio, where DEATH takes a DELICIOUS turn!

Guest Post: The ART in Writing

I taught high school English for twenty-three years. I used to survey my students at the beginning of every year to find out how they learned best. Inevitably, the majority of students showed they were visual learners. This told me a lot about my struggling readers—they struggled to visualize and create a (what I called) mind-movie as they read.

I’d always loved sketching and painting and visuals myself. Heck, I’m a visual learner too, but I was fortunate in that I didn’t struggle to create that mind-movie when I read. This led me to use art, images, video clips, and collages while reading things in class. Everyone benefitted from it, including me!

So, it’s no surprise the first time I got writer’s block, I turned to sketching and art to help me through it. The last three years of being a full-time writer and writing under various pen names in multiple genres, I’ve found that having images copied and pasted into my drafts helps me describe people, places, and things. Whenever I hit a wall, if I take the time to sketch out a character or place, I find that as I sketch, a story develops in my head, and that gets translated into the plot of the book I’m writing.

Without fail, every time I get writer’s block, art saves the day. Here are some of the sketches I’ve done over time to help me through those tough times.
