Toolbox Essentials for New Homeowners

Lifestyle

Thanks for sharing!

If you’ve just moved into a new home, then you may already have a long list of fixes you’d like to implement. It might be that you’ve moved into a property which needs extensive work – and that might even have been part of the appeal!

Before you get started, you’ll need to have assembled a few choice tools into your toolbox. Having access to these will allow you to tackle the vast majority of household tasks. In cases where you need something a little more specialized, it might make sense to borrow from a friend or family member. For what follows, however, you’ll need a device of your own.

Laser Level

A green laser-level is a fantastic substitute for a chalk-line. Just set it on a surface and it’ll shoot out a perfectly parallel line. Perfect for installing bookcases and cabinets.

Spirit-level

Checking whether something is level is easy when you have the spirit-level. Get one that’s pocket-size, and one that’s a little bit larger. They’re cheaper than the laser-level, and more immediate – but ideally, you’ll have access to both.

Handsaw

If you need to cut wood, then you’ll need a saw. The table saw is a little bit more intimidating, and for many it isn’t necessary. If you’re going to be adjusting architrave or coving, then get a mitre-saw. It’ll let you cut perfect angles.

Hammer

Hammers allow you to drive nails into walls, and do basic carpentry. The claw on the other side of the hammer will also allow you to extract the nails that don’t quite make it. If possible, buy your hammer from a real-world shop. You can tell from the weight whether it’s going to do the job nicely.

Tape Measure

You’re going to be measuring everything in your home. If you need a new carpet, then you need to know how big the room is. If you need a new set of curtains, then you need to know how wide the window is. Get a tape-measure that’s brightly-colored, and comes with a clip so that you can attach it to your belt.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers come in a range of shapes and sizes. There are the big ones that you’ll be using to take doors off their hinges, and there are the little ones you’ll be using to get into the inside of remote controls, game pads, light switches and laptops. There are flat-heats, cross-heads, and a range of more specialized versions. For most homeowners, the main two are what really counts. Get a decent set and it’ll set you up for life.

Allen Keys

If you’re assembling furniture, draining radiators, or adjusting the gas on your pneumatic monitor-stand, then you’ll need an Allen key. Keep an assortment of them to hand, as they have a habit of going missing.
