Hi! I’m Dove Agnew, former successful dress designer who was living the high life in New York, until my sleazy business partner used my business to move his drugs, leaving me to pack my ruined reputation and move back home to the tiny town of Harland Creek.
Despite the setback, all was going relatively well until I found Gertrude Brown’s body on the floor of my mom’s quilt shop. Now, rumors are flying and all eyes are on me. I’m a murder suspect! Even my ex-boyfriend, the current chief of police, is suspicious of me.
Now, it’s up to me to clear my name and find out who the real killer is before someone else gets hurt. But I’m going to need help, and the Harland Creek Quilters, and a goat named Petunia, are just the group to get things done.
Welcome to the new series set in the beloved town of Harland Creek.
With the quilting club ladies and a sidekick, which happens to be a goat, this book will keep you guessing and laughing out loud!
My review of The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt
The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is such a delightful cozy mystery book, and I have fallen in love with Harland Creek, the little town in which the book takes place. As I was looking around Goodreads, I discovered that the author has another series set in Harland Creek. Those are sweet, clean romance books. Since I enjoy reading that genre as well, I’m going to have to read those to get another Harland Creek fix. If you love small town cozies, I think you’re going to love it in Harland Creek!
Dove Agnew has returned to Harland Creek to live with her mom. She left for NYC to hit it big, and she did. But it all came crashing down around her. Now she’s back with a beat-up car and very few belongings. Helping her mom out in the quilt shop was helping her get some normalcy back in her life, but then she finds a body in the back room! Since she was seen arguing with the victim, Dove is on the suspect list for Gertrude’s murder. Never mind that Gertrude had more enemies than friends…let’s say 98.9% of the town knew she was a bossy crook and couldn’t stand her. The others just put up with her. Dove, her mom, and her mom’s friends in the quilting group know Dove couldn’t murder anyone, and they set out to prove her innocence.
The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt gives a pretty good overview of the characters. Some we get to know more in depth than others, but as the series progresses, I’m sure they’ll become much more familiar to us. Though Dove is down and out, she gains back some of her confidence throughout the book. The quilters consist of several characters, but I felt like I really got to know the character Weenie during the book. I adore her! Dean, the chief of police and Dove’s high school flame, is another strong character whom I feel I got to know pretty well. And Petunia, the goat, adds a lot of charm and humor to the story.
I thought that the mystery was very well plotted, and we’re given just enough clues to help the ladies find out who murdered Gertrude. There are several suspects, including Dove, who have a good motive to murder Gertrude, but in the end, I think you’ll figure out whodunit.
The charming setting, well-written characters, and exciting mystery make The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt one to add to your TBR piles. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series, and I highly recommend it!
Character guest post: Petunia
Tell us your name and where you live in the book The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt. And is this a series?
My name is Petunia. I’m a goat. And I live in Harland Creek, Mississippi. My owner is Heather Smith. Her boyfriend, Grayson gave me to Heather as a gift. He made her mad so he gave me to her when I was a baby goat. I love Heather but she works a lot. So, I spend a lot of time with the old lady, Elizabeth Harland. She bakes me cookies and brings me along to quilt. I like to eat both the cookies and the quilts. The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt is the first in the new series Harland Creek Mystery Quilters. But my first appearance was in Promise Kept (The Harland Creek Series)
Does the author, Jodi Allen Brice, get to write everything you do in the novel? Or do you have a say?
I’m Petunia. I always have a say. I’m the heroine of the book too. But don’t tell Dove. She thinks this book is all about her. It’s not. It’s about me.
And yes, I get to have a say in what’s written.
How do you evolve as a character?
Well, I evolve with each scene I’m in. I go from eating flowers to nibbling on quilts. My favorite quilts are the ones with flowers. And then there was the important document that tasted nice and minty.
Which character do you like the most in this book?
Of course, Elizabeth. She’s like my grandma. I like Dove, too. It’s hard to pick a favorite because they all are sweet to me. Agnes gives me gas station hotdogs, which are my fav.
Where do you first appear in this book?
Dove is a weenie. She faints at the sight of blood. So I go with Agnes and Bernice to help clean up the crime scene. That’s my first appearance.
You mentioned above that Dove isn’t the main character of the book. Can you explain?
Sure. The main character is the one who has their picture on the book. As you can clearly see, I’m on the front and the back of the book. That means I’m the main character. They just are just saying it’s Dove because I don’t speak English. I speak goat, which a lot of people can’t understand. It’s very frustrating.
Okay. So is there anything you want the readers to know about The Mystery of the Tea Cup Quilt?
Sure. If you like cozy mysteries, old ladies who are smart and sassy, and cute little goats like me, buy the book!
