My review of Safeguarding the Witness

If you enjoy reading page-turning, inspirational romantic suspense books, you’ll love Safeguarding the Witness by Laurie Winter! Don’t start this before bed; otherwise, you’ll be up all night reading!

The story starts out strong and just keeps getting better. I enjoy stories where the main characters have to hide out from the “bad guys.” I think that comes from my childhood since my sisters and I often played spies and lost kids (it was a whole thing we made up…). We read mysteries and came up with our own scenarios, so these hiding out stories are always some of my favorites! Safeguarding the Witness was exceptionally exciting!

Kayla’s plans of a peaceful Easter break in her hometown take an unexpected turn when she receives a cryptic text from her estranged father. He needs her to take care of her much younger half-sister for reasons he doesn’t share in the text. When she arrives at his house, the door is ajar, and Kayla doesn’t know what she’ll walk into. She certainly doesn’t expect to see her high school ex-boyfriend, Nicholas, at her dad’s house too! The place is trashed, and Nicholas says that Kayla’s dad contacted him as well. Nicholas tells Kayla that her dad has changed and is no longer a drunk, druggie. He’s cleaned up for his little girl Olive, since he is all she has. Kayla doesn’t believe it, but she still needs to find him and her sister. Murder, attempted murder, attempted kidnapping. Safeguarding the Witness has it all!

The characters in Safeguarding the Witness are well-written and believable. Kayla’s attitude toward her dad is understandable. She’s never been able to trust him to make responsible decisions. Though she’s got a great mom, being unable to trust her dad made her self-reliant which makes it hard to rely on anyone else to protect her. And Nicholas is all about making the big bucks as a bodyguard to celebrities in LA. Being back home, seeing Kayla, and spending time with people he cares about reminds him that life isn’t all about money. Kayla’s little sister and Kayla’s mom are also really strong characters, and the author’s excellent portrayal of the characters made me care about what happened to them.

One reason I enjoy reading Love Inspired Suspense books is the fact that faith in God is an integral part of the story. Sometimes the characters have drifted from their faith and events lead them back to God. In one part of this story, Nicholas recognizes that he’s “let his relationship with God starve for too long.” Money and success will never fill the hole in us that is only meant for God to fill. Nothing can take God’s place!

If you’re a fan of suspense books with clean romance and a Christian message, you will love Safeguarding the Witness. I highly recommend it and look forward to reading more books by Laurie Winter.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
