Aiden O’Rourke needed cash to help pay for college so he made money by selling his sperm. He was young, attractive, smart…and popular. Now many years later, his offspring are coming forward—eleven of them and counting—and connecting on a website they created called Donor73101.com.
Pat Pirard, Santa Cruz County Law Librarian turned PI, is approached by next door neighbors Tina and Robin who want to start a family. Because Tina was conceived via sperm donation, they want to be 100% certain that their baby and Tina won’t have the same father.
It doesn’t take Pat long to determine that Aiden O’Rourke was Tina’s sperm donor. It also doesn’t take her long to discovers that one by one, his offspring are being murdered. By whom and why? Well, that’s a mystery.
Character Guest Post from Pat Pirard
I do love my rings but I’m one-handed now…
because I’m saving my left hand for my new engagement and wedding rings. Bracelets and earrings are not affected, though so I can get my bling fix by wearing them. Has it really only been nine months since my life was completely upended? Last May I was the highly respected Santa Cruz County Law Librarian, about to turn thirty-five, owner of a spectacular if used sunshine yellow Mercedes convertible which I was allowed to park in a space at work reserved just for me, settled with my pets Dot, a Dalmatian, and my cat Wimsey in a cute rental, and pretty much over my long-time boyfriend who dumped me to go back to an old girlfriend. I hadn’t even become involved in murder for the first time.
All that changed in a flash when I was downsized from my job because of a money crunch and my best friend, Syda Gonzales, an artist in search of her medium enrolled us in a glass making glass. She thought we might become the next Annie Glass; instead, we became witnesses to murder…which may have been the best thing that ever happened to me.
In my panic to figure out how to support myself and my pets, I had printed out business cards declaring myself PIP Inc. The PIP part stands for Private Investigator Pa,t and had distributed them to all the attorneys who knew me from the law library. I hoped they’d hire me to help with investigations for their cases and they did, starting with the gorgeous Mark Bellows. He hired me to help defend one of “The Glass House” owners of the studio where the murder took place. It’s also because of the murder that I met Deputy Sheriff Tim Lindsey. I wasn’t particularly interested in him, but that man was persistent.
I figured out who the real killer was as soon as I figured out the real reason why the murder happened and did such a good job that attorney Roger Drago hired me to help him untangle an estate. It turned out that was more complicated than either of us expected because of “The Funeral Murder.” I almost got blown up in that case.
After that experience, I was relieved when the city of Watsonville hired me to uncover the real identity of a mysterious woman who died from natural causes—at least it seemed like she had—almost a year before. I thought finding out who she was and who her heirs were seemed safe enough. It turned out “The Corpse’s Secret Life” brought me into a world of international complications and almost got me and my now new husband killed. Funny how that shook up our relationship. I knew how we felt about one another but he was taking too long to propose, so I had to propose to him.
We managed to get married even after he was shot at our wedding in “Dearly Beloved Departed.” So now I’ve toned down my bling wearing on my left hand and just finished figuring out who was killing the offspring of Aiden O’Rourke, sperm “Donor 73101.”
It’s been a wild and eventful nine months, but I’m loving most of it. I was never bored as a law librarian and I did learn many of the skills I use in my work now, but—wow—it was never as exciting as my life has become lately.

Thanks for having Pat tell her origin story. I almost forgot how much has happened to my protagonist in less than a year.
