When dangerous black magic surfaces, only the strength of a powerful coven can contain it.
With winter coming quickly to Hollow’s Glenn, the town anxiously prepares for the annual Night of Lights event. But planning gets disrupted when water witch Simone discovers the body of a local businessman in the icy town river. She and her cousin, Autumn, must figure out how the mysterious murder connects to the dark vines of magic seeping through the cold waters.
As they bring the founding families together for the first time in decades, the girls try to fight the growing black magic while uncovering who is to blame for the most recent death. Will they find the killer before more accidents claim the lives of others in Hollow’s Glenn, or will the girls themselves become victims to the dark waters?

Interview with Author Kristen King
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
A River of Resentment by Kristen King
Tell us a little about yourself.
Hello, everyone. I’m a creative mom of two originally from Chicago, but our family has lived all over the world as a military family. We now call the Colorado mountains our home, and I get inspiration for all of my creative pursuits, especially writing, from my beautiful surroundings.
When I’m not writing, I love baking, snuggling up in our cozy house, pulling tarot cards, and taking photos. I really love all things cozy as well as the metaphysical, so writing paranormal cozy mysteries makes for the perfect creative outlet for me!
How long have you been writing?
When I was young, I wrote lots of poetry, and I enjoyed many other creative pursuits that kept my ideas churning as well. I dabbled with writing throughout the years for blogs or creating podcasts. Although, I didn’t really start seriously writing until a few years back when I worked as a life coach. I wrote guided meditations and published a quarterly magazine about intentional living. That’s when I decided to write a couple nonfiction books to get a broader message across about living intentionally.
After doing nonfiction writing for a while, I kept getting the urge to try my hand at fiction. Once I started, I caught the bug pretty quickly and haven’t looked back. Now, I’m focused on writing paranormal cozy mysteries.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
I didn’t always know that I wanted to be an author, but I knew I wanted to do something artistic. I actually went to school for architectural design, and I spent some time doing graphic design and photography as well. I always had the best time coming up with the ideas for all my projects, though, so when I fell into fiction-writing, it just made sense!
It’s such a fun creative outlet that includes all the things I love like magic, cozy vibes, and mystery. Plus, I get to also do the other creative stuff along with writing like making my own book covers and recipe testing. I feel like all my creative pursuits have come together nicely to do this work.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I love reading cozies, and magical ones are my favorite. They just give me that warm feeling of comfort with the small towns, the recipes, and all the seasonal events. Plus, who doesn’t love a good magical spell thrown in as well?
I mix up my reading with a bit of nonfiction biographies and metaphysics, contemporary romance, traditional mysteries, and some paranormal fantasy here and there. I’m such a mood reader that I need lots of options on a “TBR” list because I never really know what I’ll want to dive into until I’m ready for it.
Right now, I’m reading The Whispered Word in Ellery Adams’ Secret, Book, and Scone Society series. I like that those books bring up more difficult topics than normal cozies, so I’m interested in her writing style. I also started the Lovelight Farms contemporary romance series, and I’m hoping that will be a good choice for the holidays.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
I have a sun/moon room attached to my bedroom that’s decked out with crystals and candles. My desk overlooks a beautiful mountain view and all the rooftops, which are usually covered in snow this time of year.
My cat and I love spending the days there. I sit at the desk writing, and she curls up in a circle on a little meditation pillow. The sun streams in, and I play cozy fireplace sounds in the background while I write.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
I always choose a new candle for every book I write, and that sits on my desk along with carefully selected crystals that are meant for creativity and good communication. I also keep my water bottle, my daily smoothie, and a seasonal notepad with my weekly to-do list in the corner. Everything has a place, but of course, sometimes I sit down to find the kiddos have moved the crystals around.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
In elementary school, I remember reading Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. That started me on series like Ramona and Beezus, The Babysitters Club, and Sweet Valley High to name a few. Anne of Green Gables probably ranked up there highly for me because Anne always got into trouble with her curiosity. She never sat still and did as she was told, and I appreciated that about her character. Now, I see that in my own daughter a lot, and Anne’s character reminds me of her.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I like all of the above, actually. At any given time, I usually have one of each going. I’ll listen to the audiobooks in the car or while I’m doing tasks around the house. Then, I’ll have an ebook going on my devices for when I’m waiting for the kids or if I want to read at random times. At night, I’ll probably have a paperback by the side of the bed to give my eyes a rest for the day.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
I would choose Scotland. The mountains, lochs, and beautiful mix of cozy weather really speaks to me, and the culture there feels so cozy and warm. My husband and I lived in England for a few years, and my trips to Scotland were some of my favorite. Honestly, Colorado isn’t too far off from that, but there’s just something about the highlands and lowlands with the history there. I don’t think there’s any shortage of magic and mystery in those lands.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
My own personal development journey has influenced my writing the most. If I hadn’t become a creative entrepreneur and started down a path of understanding all the parts that make me who I am, I never would have been able to write the way I do now. All the elements, the spells, the recipes, the friendship, the twists and turns, and the sense of place that I put into my books come out of a lifelong exploration of self and my place in this world. I’m so grateful to have had so many amazing teachers and coaches, spiritual mentors, and even the gift of living on different continents to bring these experiences together.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
For me, the writing itself can be a bit solitary, but the business side is where I do a lot of networking and connecting. I belong to some great writing groups including Sisters in Crime, the Self-Publishing Formula groups from Mark Dawson, and to smaller organizations and mastermind groups where I’ve developed friendships. I love going to writing conferences and workshops as well so that I can connect with other authors and creatives.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m currently writing a mystery novella set around the harvest season as an exclusive for Prolific Works. That one will be out early next year. Plus, I’ve started the fifth book in my Hollow’s Glenn Coven Mystery series, and that one focuses on the earth as the major element in the mystery. So I’ll be bringing Eve’s character who works at the local coffee shop and bakery more front and center in that story.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
