A Q&A with Author Gina Holder

Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a stay-at-home mom, and I homeschool my seventeen-year-old daughter. I live in Casper, Wyoming. I’ve been playing the piano since I was nine. I love watching Hallmark mysteries with my husband, and we make a game out of guessing who the killer is. I enjoy building Lego sets and solving “Exit the Game” and “Hunt a Killer” immersive games.

How long have you been writing?

Since I was about ten years old! Being published was a dream of mine from a young age. In 2015, I started writing consistently and released my first novel in 2017.

Did you always want to be an author?

Pretty much!

Do you have a favorite place to write?

I write at my desk in our dining room. It’s centrally located where I can keep an eye on everything else going on in the household.

What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?

I have a PC computer and a second monitor. I always keep my tumbler full of water on a coaster from our church. In the corner of my desk, I have a little boy porcelain doll dressed like Sherlock, complete with magnifying glass. On the shelves over my desk, I keep stuffies and other trinkets that remind me of my books or represent other things I love.

Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?

My favorite genres are historical romance and romantic suspense. I’m currently reading Watch Your Back by Kristen Hogrefe Parnell and Written in Secret by Crystal Caudill.

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

That’s a hard question. I’ve traveled to quite a few countries, but I’ve always wanted to visit Ireland, Japan, and Australia, so I’m going to say, any one of those would do just fine.

What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?

Time and experience. Good writing doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, and it takes growing in the craft. I started writing (again) nearly ten years ago now. I’ve read craft book after craft book and article after article, and when I found I had a weakness in my work, I read more. I’ve attended several virtual conferences each year since 2020, and each one I learn something new. Each of those teachers have influenced who I am as a writer today. And even after all I’ve learned, I’ve far from arrived. Every bit of advice and every bit of criticism, I take to heart and try to grow from it.

Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?

Mary Alford, Patricia Bradley, and Joanna Davidson Politano have been the most supportive. I can always count on them to encourage me and to help me along this journey.

I’m also part of a local writer’s group where we support each other and host local book events together. They have been a huge blessing and encouragement to me and make me feel like I’m not alone in this.

Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?

I am currently working on the second book for my upcoming series from Scrivenings Press LLC, The Game Masters.

Here’s a little about the book, The Escape Game.

Twenty years ago, the world’s leading enigmatologist disappeared.

Demi Kayne has spent her life trying to solve the cryptic note her father, Professor Kayne, left behind when he vanished without a trace. When his missing journal is discovered, Demi deciphers the code, which leads her to the Ives Mansion—a secluded estate hiding a deadly secret.

Liam Shepherd, a zealous missionary and escape room enthusiast, arrives in Silver Falls searching for his missing sister. When the two disappearances appear linked, Liam joins her quest to uncover the truth about her father and locate his twin.

Together, they venture into the mansion, only to find themselves trapped in a labyrinth of puzzles, peril, and deceit. With time running out, Demi and Liam must rely on their faith, courage, and growing bond to survive the game and uncover the sinister truth lurking in the shadows.

Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
