“You’re positive?” [Trevor] asked [Kinsley].
“Well … no. But there’s no reason to believe someone did it on purpose.”
“Maybe. Maybe not. But I’m also not a big believer in coincidences, and with the two incidents last week, not to mention that anonymous complaint, I’d encourage you to beef up your security.”
“We’ll be more diligent and keep the gate closed at night. There’s nothing to be concerned about.”
Trevor studied her across the desk. She was right. Gasoline in [a diesel] tank could very well be an oversight, although a costly one.
Or not.
“Let me call Petersen. Have them send some security personnel to patrol overnight. We can also open up an investigation. Look into things to see who might be trying to cause trouble for you.”
“No.” She swallowed. “I mean, that’s not necessary.”
His gaze remained fixed on her. But she couldn’t, or wouldn’t, hold eye contact with him. “If it’s the cost, I can work out a deal for you.”
“No. Honestly. We’ll be fine.” She grabbed her e-tablet and stood. “I have a patient waiting. I appreciate all your help, but it’s not necessary to involve anybody else.”
She hurried around her desk and out the door.
Kinsley knew something.
Was she in trouble? Had she gone crosswise with someone intent on revenge?
Or was she protecting somebody?
Either way, it was time to step in, whether she wanted him to or not.
