What do Bigfoot and boxing have in common? Meet Raquel (AKA Rocky) Nelson, a retired single woman with a big heart and a deadly punch!
Rocky was looking forward to a carefree camping trip in the Sierra Nevada Mountains with her fraternal twin sister, Bridget, and their two favorite men. A recent Bigfoot sighting lures Bridget’s new boyfriend, Jeff, into a search for the elusive beast, but the weekend turns deadly. When Jeff becomes the prime suspect, Bridget pleads for Rocky’s help. Reluctantly, Rocky is pulled back into the role she thought she’d left behind, and once more heads back into the wilderness—this time hunting not a myth, but a murderer.
Interview with Author Karen A. Phillips
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’ve always loved reading mysteries. I started with Nancy Drew, then moved on to Agatha Christie, and have devoured many great authors ever since. I started writing late in life. I have many short stories published and it took five years to write my first novel, “A Deadly Combo,” which released in 2023.
How long have you been writing?
Since 2012, which is when I joined Capitol Crimes, the Sacramento chapter of Sisters In Crime. That’s when I started getting serious about my writing.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
My favorite cozy authors are Agatha Christie and M.C. Beaton. My dream was to write as well as they did.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I have a wide taste in fiction. I am currently reading a thriller by Kelli Stanley.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
I love writing at my dining table as there is a large window overlooking a bird bath that Western Bluebirds enjoy and my two cats enjoy watching, also!
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
A mess of paper, notes, and books. It’s kind of embarrassing, actually . . .
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
A few I loved are, “A Wrinkle In Time,” “The Phantom Tollbooth,” and “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.”
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
Physical books, for sure! I love the tactile quality of touching paper.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia. I would love to write about the underwater environment which is experiencing reef die-off and write about the efforts to restore the reef habitat. I would write a children’s book for purposes of educating youth.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
Absolutely! If I could name them all I would, but suffice it to say, all writers are supportive of each other. Joining a writing organization is crucial to improving the craft and feeling loved! Because writing is a solitary pursuit.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m working on a new series tentatively called “The Mother/Daughter Detective Agency.”
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
Thank YOU for hosting me!
