Author Interview
Thanks for taking the time to share a bit about yourself with my readers and me!
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Australian. Having left the corporate world last year, I know spend my time dreaming and writing.
I’ve actually been writing for ages, initially writing stories for my nieces and nephews. I printed the novels myself, using postcards to illustrate the stories. Then, with the help of authors like Joanna Penn, I began independently publishing eight years ago.
How long have you been writing?
I started writing Over Byron Bay, my first novel in my last year at university in Lismore which is located in the beautiful Northern Rivers area of New South Wales. For all the wannabe writers out there, let me report that it’s never too late to tell your story. It took 30 years for me to get my first novel Over Byron Bay written, edited and published.
Since then, I’ve written eight novels across the cozy mystery, romantic suspense and action-adventure genres. Having lived in Europe and Asia my stories frequently visit beautiful and sometimes, less-travelled parts of the world.
In Father Lost Child Found our main sleuths travels from Australia to Estonia, then to Thailand and Myanmar. You can watch the trailer here.
Did you always want to be an author? What made you choose the cozy mystery genre?
No, that was not obvious to me, even though I loved listening to people tell stories, watching movies and reading. As I mentioned above, I write across several genres in addition to cozy mystery. I love cozy mystery because of the use of amateur sleuths.
Do you prefer to read cozy mystery books, or do you have another favorite genre? What are you reading now?
I like solving puzzles and finding out who-done-it but don’t like stories with graphic violence. Cozy mysteries are a safe place to spend time. I also read thrillers and police procedurals. I’m currently reading Michael Robotham’s novel, When You Are Mine.
Do you have a favorite place to write?
When I’m in the zone, after I’ve done the dreaming and planning, I write at my standing desk. I rise early and don’t stop, (well try to), until my daily word target is achieved. I often go to bed thinking of the scene I’m writing and musing about where I will take the story. This is a fun and productive way to develop the story.
I do a lot of plotting when I’m on a long-distance flight. It’s great not to be distracted. I always carry a pen and paper where I can note down something I’ve overheard of seen.
What’s on your desk (if you write at one!)?
Apart from the usual paraphernalia I always have a laminated one page Powerpoint slide with images, and summary life details of the main characters in my story. I also get a book cover made early and have it on my desk to inspire me to keep writing.
What is the first book you remember reading as a child? What was one of your favorite books you read as a child?
I loved the Famous Five and the Secret Seven as a child and all the adventures they engaged in. I most identified with the tomboy character called George short for Georgina which I thought was clever.
When I was a young teen, I was absorbed by Colleen McCullough’s coming of age story Thorn Birds.
Do you like audiobooks, physical books, or e-books better? Why?
I like all three formats. It depends on the nature of the story and my physical location as to which format I choose. If I’m going to listen to a book it depends on who has done the narration as well as how personal the story is. Audiobooks are great for combining with a long walk. Paperbacks are great on a beach chair and e-books are my preferred format for reading in bed as I have a tablet holder hovering above me.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
Such a difficult question. I’m drawn to opposite environments. Beautiful cities like Rome or Paris provide plenty of opportunities for bumping into nefarious characters while visiting inspiring locations. I’m also attracted to the idea of living, in near isolation from other people, on a deserted island or in a small village where you don’t speak the language.
What or who has influenced you the most as a writer?
There have been different authors who have influenced me at different times in my life. Gail Honeyman, Kristin Hannah, Kate Quinn, Michael Robotham and Trevor Noah quickly come to mind.
I have always loved the play ‘Love Letters’ by A.R. Gurney. Two people telling their life story through the letters that they wrote each other. The structure is simple, and the words so powerful.
Do you have any author friends who support you while you’re writing? Do you belong to any writing groups?
I have in the past but not at the moment. I would like to rejoin a writing group. Feedback is so important and it’s great to get it before your story is out there in the world.
I’m a member of two Book Clubs. I love being prompted to read outside my preferred genres as I discover new styles of storytelling.
Finally, what are you working on now? Can you tell us a bit about it?
I’m in the dreaming stage for the follow on to Father Lost Child Found and the writing stage for a story about three women who are running away from their lives.
Thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions!
