Supernatural intrigue, a web of lies, and deadly secrets
When a loyal customer begs Tabby Quigsly to look into her uncle’s suspicious death, Tabby can’t say no—even if the police rule it an accident. Dr. Willim Rosemont, a respected psychiatrist, took a fatal tumble down Savannah’s infamous Stone Stairs of Death, but the five people who were with him that night all claim to have seen nothing.
Tabby’s ties to the case run deep—friends, frenemies, and even her husband’s best friend are among the witnesses. Then she uncovers a chilling truth: Rosemont was part of Savannah’s hidden Paranormal Council—the very group Tabby’s been hiding from all her life.
As the August heat rises, so does the pressure. Tabby’s new marriage is reeling from revelations about her husband’s shocking powers, her psychic gifts are spiraling, and the killer is closing in.
Can she unravel the mystery before everything—including her freedom—goes up in flames?
Guest Post: The Stone Stairs of Death and Tabby’s Fierce Determination
By Valona Jones aka Maggie Toussaint
In the 5th and final book of A Magic Candle Shop Mystery Series, FLAMED OUT, amateur sleuth Tabby Winslow Quigsly is asked to solve the mystery of the noted psychiatrist to the movers and shakers of Savannah, GA, fell to his death on the Stone Stairs of Death (SSOD)* by multiple parties.
First, a frequent patron of the shop and Savannah College of Art and Design, Fawn Meldrin, asks Tabby to look into the death of her great uncle. She knows he was neither clumsy nor suicidal and she’s certain that his death is no accident. He was with a group of friends and they’d paused at the top of those stairs for two of the party of six to go another way. Oddly, not one of the other five people saw anything amiss that might indicate a murder.
Tabby knows two ways that someone could have attacked Dr. Willim Rosemont with stealth. First, the alleged killer could have used an invisibility cloak. One of Tabby’s informants had used one to visit her a few stories back. Also there is the possibility of someone having an invisibility talent like Tabby. She knows of one other person who has the paranormal talent, her twin sister’s boyfriend, Larry. Now that her twin has found happiness with Larry, Tabby hopes like anything it’s not him. She also fears she might be the fall guy (or gal as the case may be) for this death, so it behooves her to investigate.
Then the Police Captain sends a detective to ask her to examine the body, which is not in her skillset, but she does it anyway with near disastrous results.
Lastly, the entire Paranormal Council asks for her help in solving the case of one of their own. Dr. Willim Rosemont was a paranormal talent. Worse, he was the head of the Council, the group she’d been hiding from her whole life.
Tabby doesn’t want anything to do with the Council. She fears the walls are closing in on her new bright and shiny life. She and her twin sister have come so far, have learned so much. But there’s no way she’s going down for Rosemont’s death. In the ongoing battle of survival of the fittest, she’s “fitter” than most and determined to save herself and her family.

*Note: an interesting fact about the SSOD is that they were fashioned out of ballast rocks that long ago sailing ships carried in their hulls, then discarded to make room for their heavy cargoes of timber, turpentine, cotton, and rice available at the Savannah port. The settlers of Savannah were frugal and opportunistic. They found a great many uses for the various rocks left behind, like the SSOD that remain in use today. These ballast rocks from around the world were a true treasure trove of riches for Savannah and for all the Georgia coast. You see, at various times throughout history, all of the Georgia coast had been underwater, and as the Atlantic retreated, it left behind sand dunes and valleys of briny water. Not a rock to be had. The substrate under the sand is limestone, a porous rock that is not good for building much of anything.
