Ghost cat Soji has been acting strange, trying to tell Camelia something, but what, the octogenarian cannot discern. Is it about Ida? The Jacks House? The murder? And why does her own cat Blaze keep disappearing to the guesthouse with no apparent means of transport?

Handsome Sheriff Jamie can’t figure it out, and neither can Camelia’s clairvoyant confidant Vera nor her very special friend Ellery. Camelia is on her own to uncover the killer, but can she solve the mysteries in time to save innocent lives, and maybe a ghost or two?

Let’s talk about ghosts.

When I began writing my Tenth Life Cozy Mystery Series, which heavily involves a ghost cat, I reached out to friends and fans to ask if they’d ever had experience with a paranormal feline. I was amazed that just about everyone said yes.

More had heard their dead companion than seen them.

A familiar meow coming out of nowhere. The squeak of the cat’s favorite chair, but no cat there. Most common was the flicker of passing just beyond one’s sight or the feel of their body on the bed, sometimes involving a dip in the covers where they seemed to lie.

 Those who had contact predominantly identified as female.

Do women have closer bonds with their feline companions, or are they more sensitive to the supernatural? Maybe they just find it easier to believe beyond the constraints of society. 

The cats who visited varied greatly.

Some remarked that the visitation was from a cat long gone, where others felt their recent companion most vividly. Local strays and ferals also were mentioned, as well as friends’ cats. Sometimes recipients had never known the cat before.

My own experience with the ghosts of cats past has been more along the lines of sensing a presence or seeing a shadow out of the corner of my eye. On the other hand, I dream about them often, holding them, petting them, and sometimes trying to save them from something undefinable. Does that count as a visitation? It feels like it when I wake up.

My Tenth Life ghost character Soji has evolved from my imagination as a front-and-center type of specter. She talks only to her chosen companion Camelia who moved into the ghost’s property last summer. At the time, Camelia had no idea there was a gravestone at the back of her jungle garden, let alone that it was haunted. She found that out later. Like many of my female friends, Camelia, who is in her seventies, knew enough of life to accept the unexpected. The friendship proved its worth when Soji used her arcane powers to save Camelia from certain death. That said, Soji is a trickster and cannot be fully relied upon.

Have you been visited by a ghost cat? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Whether a will-o’-the-wisp or a full-bloomed presence like Soji, the familiar touch of a passed cat companion is a wonderful thing.
