Excerpt from Secrets in Amish Country
The slightest noise caught his attention and put him on immediate alert. A rustling near the line of trees separating them from the road.
His hand slid instinctively toward his weapon. “Eve,” he murmured, low and urgent, “get behind me and kill the light.”
She sucked in a breath. The beam of her flashlight jerked briefly before the world went dark. She moved closer. He could feel her breath against his neck.
A single pop split the unnerving quiet. In the next heartbeat, the dark world around them erupted into chaos. Muzzle flashes tore through the shadows. The sharp crack of gunfire echoed off the mountainside, overlapping, multiplying. Confirming more than one shooter.
Casey shoved Eve toward the cover of an oak. Bark exploded inches from his head.
“Stay down!” His voice cut sharp through the night as he yanked his weapon free.
Gunpowder became a sharp contrast to the earthy scents of the woods. Bullets chewed the earth around them, boring into tree trunks and snapping branches overhead. A shard of wood grazed his cheek, but he didn’t flinch.
He pressed tight to the trunk while his eyes locked on the space where the shots appeared to be aimed. Whoever was out there wasn’t spraying at random. They knew the ground, the angles, and exactly where he and Eve crouched.
This wasn’t warning fire. This was an execution.
